How to airbrush a bonnet mural - loads of techniques [a project log]

Rain rain rain... will it ever stop?

Bonnet is done, polished, installed and looks great! colour match is not as bad as I was expecting it to be, so that's a plus. Finish is pretty good too, but I'll be re-clearcoating it over christmas I think. (with scratch resistant clear)

It's been raining on and off for days now, It's been stopping play on a lot of things, including photos. I'll try and get some snapshots up when later though, Promise!

The vandal timer starts now...

What is scratch resistant lacquer? Ceramic stuff?

Looking forward to the pics :)

it's not ceramic I don't think... it will be this stuff:

Dude, I am seriously let down by your website.

Gallery / Models does not deliver.

:p

Ha!
That was meant to be for scale models, but now it's just gonna be for CG... My website skillz serverly lack though, it took me ages to get that far! look out for captions that read 'a tall building' and the odd stock photo that I can't seem to get rid of!

sorry to bring bad news guys, but I'm packing everything up to head back to uni tomorrow. My computer is already packed :( will ry my best to get pics up asap!
sorryyyy!!

Hi all

I did try to do this last night, but after just moving into my new place, and having fights with photoshop as it 'stops working' I had to give up...

here's what I have for you...

The pics of the polishing process were pretty boring, so i've narrowed it down to a few. First off is some of the papers used for sanding, starting with a 2000 grit machine sand, then finishing by hand from 2000, 2500, and 5000 grit papers. It's a little overkill but it sort of helps. THe wet sanding removes the orange peel effect that you get off the spray gun, and removs anything that fell in the clearcoat as it was curing or being applied.

Everything was dried and checked, and areas that needed extra sanding were marked:

There's hardly anything to see with the polishing part, but basicaly, I used G3, G10, and then Menzerna R853.02 polishes to bring back the shine, with 4 different mops, or polish heads [6" on a rotary machine] G3 is a compounding paste which brings back the luster fromt he sanding, G10 brings it to a swirly shine, an the menzerna finishes it all off.
dealing with fresh lacquer is a little different to detailing cars, so you may not recognise some of the products mentioned.

The finish looks great during the day, and the colour match between the panels that I was worried about is not too bad. It's worse at night, or in artificial light though. All will be sorted when I paint the rest of it though.

There are a few scratches in the surface which I plan to address over christmas, for now though I just ran out of time to do anything about it.

on with the pics... these are just snaps really. I need to get out to a local beauty spot, park my car, and make said beauty spot... less beautiful! then take some pics!

That is a really great piece of work, awestruck by your skills.

Its a damn shame that work like this isnt more mainstream and available for people, would love to see more of it around. I am assuming its very time consuming and hence expensive if doen by someone whos doign it as a career. :(

Thread bumpage -- but great as I missed the conclusion of this last year.

Great work. Glad to see it finished, any changes to the car in the last year.
