Living long term in Egypt

hilarious thread. completely ignoring any comments from people who have been there and witnessed what goes on . strangely you seem more concerned about the broadband speed than your own safety and wellbeing.

you say you've done research but it sounds like you have read a tourist guide.

hellhole is the only way i can describe it. most people go there on holiday because its dirt cheap but they rarely go back and thats after seeing the nicer bits.

your slagging off of Middlesbrough and praise of Egypt sums it all up really. your in for an eye opener.

me personally being a westerner i would/could never live in Muslim country this day of age.

Women in Egypt have no way out of violent marriages in a society where beatings are acceptable and their rights systematically violated

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Egypt

In 2004 a seventeen-year-old private university student received a 17 years sentence in prison including 2 years hard labor, for posting a personal profile on a gay dating site.

Human rights for women and gay people are non existent in Egypt. To me, thats a clear sign that the country is a crap hole. I cant find much on adultery outside of marriage though, but I would assume that a lot of women would get honor killed by their male family members for that.

I know I'll have my share of stories to tell. But let me tell you about the outskirts of Cairo. Theres a place called Maadi where a lot of the Internationals stay. This place is much like a typical America suburb (leafy green wide roads, parks scattered around, much less noise and traffic compared to the centre of Cairo, better air quality and upmarket shops aswell as a shopping mall like Trafford Centre).

So tell me, (honest question here) have you organised yourself a place there yet? Or hoping to find a place there once you start work? And do you think you can afford to live there on charaity work wage?

Do bear in mind expats working for international companies abroad are typically paid very nicely and consequently the places where they tend to live are very expensive.

Good luck with the move OP:),me personally being a westerner i would/could never live in Muslim country this day of age.

Doing research is one thing, living there is completely different im afraid

I'm offended by that remark, were not all ak47 swinging westerners haters you know.... the penny just dropped for you son? Yeah I'm a Muslim and your assumption that all Muslim countries are terrorist countries is a joke.

You organise a place by contacting brokers (which I've already done). Once there they show you some apartments, if you like sing on the dotted lines and that's it.

I agree human right for women not being exercised in Egypt is totally wrong. There are groups trying to help them but it's like talking to a brick wall. As for Gay people, it's against Islam to be gay hence they won't be welcome there. Funny thing is though you can walk about with a Star of David T Shirt in Egypt, try that in Saudi and you get locked up! the UK and America are far more relaxed compared to middle eastern countries.

But in Egypt a secular court operates above the Sharia. Sharia law in Egypt only handles domestic and family matters, it is not as fully implemented as it is in Saudi Arabia or Iran.

But the law still follows 'religious morality' based beliefs.

Ai the two try to mix but it can't happen as Islam is a way of life, it includes everything like Economics, Family values and not just law. Anyways think were digressing here, lets get back to living in Egypt or in fact any other country some OCer might be living in would like to share their stories.

Wow,

I have to be honest, i'm totally shocked by almost all the comments here. Firstly, the OP I dont believe, was asking for anyone's opinion on Egypt. The guy has made a pretty huge and brave decision, to give up the luxury of comfort in the UK, with a job and steady income, and has decided to just try something new with his life. Instead of telling him how much of a dump Egypt is, why not offer something constructive. I guess most of you are too bombed down with your 9-5, mortgages, and spending all of 3 hours with your family when you get home sitting on your pc or infront of the TV. Congratulations, some of you have seen the place for 2 weeks on a holiday, and seem to think you understand the entire country and a culture, that you had no interest in experiencing for more than their sunshine. Im fairly certain before most of you went, you received some bad feedback about Egypt from friends, or online...Did that stop you from going?? Obviously not, cause so many of you still seem to have been. So considering you didnt listen to someone elses opinions and advice, why the hell try and give them to someone else. Id happily bet a few English pounds, that more the most of you wouldnt even give moving to a foreign country out of of comfort zone a second thought, which to be honest...I find kind of sad. Im sure youll all really enjoy your 9-5 until the day you die, experiencing the world....2 weeks at a time. Have fun!

To the OP, I think what youre doing is great. You dont need to go there for a holiday first to see what youre doing...just bloody go, who cares. My only advice would be to stop planning and researching and just go. If you dont like it, come back home! Its as simple as that. I think youll have a riot. I personally have only been to Egypt twice, and Ive got to be honest, I really enjoyed it. Yeah I had some trouble adjusting to the locals spotting me from a mile away and trying their luck with me...But, luckily, im a talker and ill talk to anyone, and if it wasnt for this I wouldnt have got some awesome advice from one local. After trying to sell me a few bits, I ended up just asking about him, his shop family, and the like...and he stopped. He told me that so few people actually talk to all the locals properly, as they are more concerned with avoiding them, or convinced they are going to shoot them, or just get all british and start raising their voice to leave them alone...that the locals find it amusing to intimidate people a little, because they are so used to the humour of it...as actually, they arent that intimidating at all. So he told me to just do what I was doing, talk to the locals like human beings, and theyll treat you completely differently. Theyll open up to you, have a giggle, and yeah theyll cheekily try and offer yousomething as you leave, but the pressure stops. this information for me, changed my entire experience. After this, I didnt have a single problem. Next day when I went back to actually buy a scarf I had seen the day before...I was welcomed with hugs, and everyone knew me by name in the shop, and I was introduced to some other locals, and in the end, got the scarf for free. Which in return I cooked for everyone the following day.

You will ultimately make of the trip what you will, but it sounds to me like youre going to have an amazing experience and time to me. Especially with you wanting to learn the language, what a better place to start. I cant advise you on the visa and working process, but I do know friends who have been travelling, and ended up working in Egypt for a couple of months because they enjoyed it so much, so I know its possible, and im sure not that difficult to achieve.

I think youre doing a great thing, and youll have the time of your life...and if not, come back, got a temp job, save some money...find a new country to go and experience. See the world, have fun, then worry about settling down into life. Anyone being negative about this in anyway, in my opinion is too unhappy in their own life, but however, cant now do this because they cant escape their comfort of their jobs, knowing they now have all their life debts and worries to contend with.

Have an awesome time!

Why would you cook the scarf they gave you for free, and then try to make them eat it?!

Ok, then the second part of the question. Will you be able to afford to live in Maadi with the jobs you'll be doing?

Lol Yeah ok "Son" my comments were not meant to offend and where do i mention terrorists?

Simply the majority of westerners would struggle to adapt to life in a muslim country, well i would anyway a completely different way of life.

A slight overreaction on your behalf

snip...Have an awesome time!

Thanks mate. I see your on the same level as me when it comes to why I'm doing this, will keep y'all updated. Im going first week of October :)

Ok, then the second part of the question. Will you be able to afford to live in Maadi with the jobs you'll be doing?

I have enough savings live a few months even if I struggle to find a decent job

To get an Egyptian work permit requires an AIDS test. The Foreign Office usually advises that the risk of terrorism is generally high.

Currency is physically dirty, handle it as little as possible.

Can't really offer more than that sorry.

UPDATE: Was there for a month and 2 weeks, had to come back coz crappy Netflights wouldn't extend my ticket so going back in a couple of weeks. Outcome: bloody awesome time can't wait too get back!

My whole family love Egypt, so much my brother leaves on the 16th to work out there for a year. I wouldn't do it but guess he likes it crazy git.
