okay then iam doing a build for a freind which will have

PHENOM X2 550BE
Asus M4A87TD Evo AMD 870
G.Skill RipJaw 4GB 2000mhz

the chip iam getting is second hand but a proven quad and was running at 3.4ghz the things is he is on a budget and wont understand spending loads on a fan so the cheaper the better please :) iam just a bit clueless with amd tech

okay so the ones i've thought about are

they are all ok, the freezer7 pro has been about for ages and is good for 19quid,it will cool your second hand cpu no probs!!
 
Just a word of caution. I know the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro get loads of recommendations and good reviews, but I bought one and had some problems fitting it. You are going AM3 so might not have the first problem I had with my socket 939 in that it cannot fit at all.

Secondly on AMD systems you can not fit it to blow towards the back of the case. Your only choice will be up or down, so you will basically blow hot air onto your gpu/psu depending on your config.
 
None of the above get a thermolab baram exceptionally good cooler for the money. Can keep my 955 under 50 degrees with 8 hours of prime at 3.8ghz
 
Would recommend an Arctic Cooling 64 Freezer Pro, I have one cooling my (AM3) Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition. Works fine for stock speeds (3.2GHz), can overclock it to 3.6GHz and have decent temps. It's pretty quiet too.

This cooler fits fine blowing towards the back of the case as normal (side on) on my AMD system.
