Hey guys,

I'm moving to London in a few days and coming from a small town in North Wales it’s going to be madness for me. I'm looking to make a list of really cool things to do within my first year, say one a week, to experience what London is really like.

So far I have things such as watching the guard change at the palace, going for afternoon tea at the Ritz, going to Royal Hospital Road etc.

Anyone have anything that they think I should definitely do?

Cheers

All the London haters out in force...

There's so much to do, I'd start with markets and you can keep on going back to them. Camden is pretty awesome, go to the stables market. Borough market obviously for food. From borough you've got the whole south bank so you've got tate modern, globe, national theatre, oxo, and lots more. It's also a great walk along the river (Go from shad thames to London eye).

At shad thames you have the design museum and some nice restaurants. Go over tower bridge and you have st katherines docks which is worth a quick wander round, then go to tower of london which is a good day out.

London bridge you've got borough market, go watch the shard being built too... Globe theatre is great and the swan bar there is nice and does good cocktails.

Further back from the river you've got southwark tube. Lots of nice bars there as well as the young and old vic theatres. young vic has a nice bar and does great burgers.

oxo tower has a nice restaurant at the top. Take your girlfriend up there and she will love you forever.

national theatre is a cool building to look round, always events going on in summertime, and look out for various food markets/installations around that area, as well as royal festival hall etc etc.

London eye is great, you get a fantastic view.

So... that's a river trip. It's also worth getting on one of the boats to greenwich. It's good to see london from the water and greenwich is a nice part to wander round, head up the hill to the royal observatory, there's a naval museum there too.

Visit the parks if the weathers nice, head out further on the overground if you can, hampton court palace is worth a visit, richmond park is nice for a walk and its full of deer.

Go watch some twenty20 cricket at lords after work.

Obviously all the free galleries/museums.

Head out to hoxton square, old street and many more places for nice bars.

Don't take the tube, get buses, you see where you are and quickly get your bearings. Londons not as big as everyone thinks it is, you can walk most places centrally.

As above and

Hit the clubs. Spend lazy hot afternoons getting drunk in Soho. Tea at the Ritz is actually not bad value as the sandwiches are great, and also infinite. Use it like a posh pizza hut buffet. :D

My best advice is just walk about. Central London is not that big and it is good to familiarise yourself as to where certain areas are in relation to others.

I love London. Born there, moved away but spent the last 10 years back there until late last year. Hopefully back soon if work comes up trumps.

What part of the Smoke are you moving to?

With the school kids taking the bus? They will give the OP nightmares with the loud talk and the playing of music through their mobile phones.

This only really happens in Zone 2 outwards... if you're in central London, the buses just have tourists and people making their way to work.

If you like mountain biking you can pop out to Swinley Forest or Dorking at weekends, there are some good trails there :)

I'm taking my wife to this on Sunday, as it's her birthday and she's a huge fan of both afternoon tea and Agatha bloody Christie!

Where are you living?

There are some excellent suggestions in here!

I'd take tea in Fortnum's (4th floor) as well.

A nice route to do one fine day:

Go Chinatown for some luncheon.
Proceed to Trafalgar Square to admire Nelson.
Enter the National Gallery: sit, browse, examine to your heart's content (or just perv at tourists :D)
Proceed at a leisurely pace to the Horse Guards', where if you're super lucky you will see the horse guards changing guard (saw it in the snow ). Then walk up to Buckingham palace from there through the park. Glorious.

Also you could try going up Primrose Hill for the view.

Some excellent suggestions in here already I must say.

Opera is worth it as the Royal Opera House is very impressive inside.
