Hi All,

Just had my Mondeo MOT'd and have an advisory on the 2 front tyres. The guy said I'd got 2 - 3 months of wear left on them so I'm in no huge rush - just want to be organised!

At the moment i have Vredstein Ultrac 205/50ZR17 on.

the Main question is: Are these decent tyres in the grand scheme of things? they seem it to me - I've only had the car 10 months so it's pretty much what I've been given.

There is the issue is getting hold of the Vredsteins; there seems to be nowhere around here that sells them!

I see there's a lot of love for conti SC3s on here; would these be a step up for me or more of the same?

oh, important point - I'm happy to pay up to about £140 a corner.

Any thoughts / suggestions much appreciated.

How does he have any idea how long you have left?

It's for him to say "3mm" or something, you need to decide how long that'll last for. If you're not planning on driving much for a while they could last a year.

Surely you're aware of your own tyre treads and roughly when you'll need to change them without the MOT guy pointing it out annually?

Quite!

If I had 3 months of tyre wear left on my Leon Cupra R then I'd only be half way through the tyres, loads of tread left.

Also is that '2-3 months' until it hits 3mm, which is really the bare minimum you want in the wet, or '2-3 months' until you hit the legal limit which is an insane 1.6mm?

What do you have on the rear? £140 a corner seems a LOT for a mondeo. I'm sure you can do better than that. You probably don't need Z rated tyres, V will be fine.

Hi all! May not have been very clear! He confirmed what id been thinking for a few weeks. They're about 3mm along the middle 75% and the shoulders are near slicks.

Don't worry, I wasn't taking the guys word as gospel. He said doing about 1000 miles a month I'd get that amount of time.

I agree, taximike. It does seem a lot for a mondeo, but it seems that's what I've gotta pay for something decent. I don't wanna spend £80 and end up with s***. I've got another vredstein on the back and an Avon Zv5.

Sorry if I sounded like a plank! :D

So now you are saying that the edges are almost bald, and the middle is down to 3mm, yet you seem to think you can eek another 3000 miles / 3 months from them?

No.

You appear to have misread, I said I wasn't taking his words as gospel. The 3 month / 3000 miles was his guess. I'm in no doubt they won't last 3000 miles!

I'm not asking about the legality of the tyres, im asking for any suggestions as to what to replace those with. :)

I know it's less of an issue on a FWD car but I prefer all 4 of my tyres to the same, and DEFINITELY match the tyres on the axel. So I'm a bit worried you have mismatched on the rear.

I agree. It's what I've inherited when I bought the car - had it 10 months. I usually rotate my tyres when I get 2 replaced, but I won't until I can have matching ones!
