Hello chaps, i'm after some advice on whether i have grounds to claim money for a problem i have had with my car.

The issue - i supplied various car parts to a garage to have the cambelt and water pump changed. Ever since the work was carried out the engine would make a loud rattling sound when revved, i took the car to a specialist fearing engine problems.
The problem was discovered to be with the water pump i sourced which was caused by a manufacturing defect which has required both the water pump and cambelt to be replaced at great cost (circa £700).

What i want to know is, what and how much do i have grounds to claim for from the original supplier of the parts? Considering that the problem is a direct result of a faulty part.

Thanks guys.

You can't claim for any labour charges involved.
You may get reimbursement for the faulty part if it can be proved that it was faulty.

The manufacturing defect entitles you to request a replacement (Sale of Goods Act?).
The fact that this faulty part caused c.£700 damage could also mean you could claim. Furthermore, who installed the part? If it were installed incorrectly then that would be negligent.

If you installed the part then the best you can get imo is a replacement part to replace the faulty one.

I would suggest that you, or your solicitor write a letter stating what has happened and what you would like done about it to the person who sold you the part. Contact your solicitor to see whether, assuming the part was correctly installed, you may make a claim for the damage caused by said part.

However, I would be interested to hear who installed this part.

My 2p. (did some prep on a similar case earlier)

One other question would be, how long was it between having the part fitted and discovering it was faulty

The faulty part was installed correctly as confirmed by the second garage I took it to. However, it did not cause £700 worth of damage, that was the price of the diagnosis and labour involved in identifying the problem and replacing the parts.

It was not long between the installation of the faulty water pump and realising there was a problem, probably taking around 2 weeks from having the cambelt and water pump changed initially and then getting it fixed at the specialist.

£700 to investigate a rattly waterpump and replace the cambelt. OUCH

What car was this on

Not that it makes any difference to claiming for costs, you'll still only get refunded the price of the faulty part

Advice on claiming money?

Sorry for your predicament.

I can put you in touch with some kind Nigerian Gentleman who is currently claiming millions of pounds on my behalf from one of my long lost relatives. He tells me he will do it free or charge. Perhaps he would be willing to help you too?

Would that help? :)

This was on an mr2 turbo, the cambelt change is quite a labour intensive process and the garage had to go through the whole process twice to discover the faulty part, initially they suspected something else.
