After clearing out itunes of stuff I don't want, and then connecting and updating my ipod, the ipod is showing 490 songs and 36.4mb space left, but
itunes shows 509 songs and 2.70Gb used. So when I try to add more than 36.4mb of music, a message says it can't be done because there isn't enough space. ipod capacity is actually 3.7GB, so shouldn't I have 1GB of space available? Is there a way I can reset or format the ipod without losing my itunes library? I don't know where the updated itunes library is stored. Cheers.

use an iPod alternative to remove all the songs. Songbird or something.

This is what I've tried so far. I deselected every song in itunes, connected the ipod so that it would update the ipod by clearing all music from it. After it did that, it showed 3.7GB capacity and 2.6GB available. So there's something wrong here, I'm missing 1GB of free space.

did you store anything on the ipod? a in, use it like a hdd?

Hmm, nope, not that I'm aware of. I tried resetting from this instruction "Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step."
but that didn't clear anything. How can I reformat the machine? The only thing I did years ago was use some software on it to unlock more audio volume.

Ah, I've seen in itunes that 1.08GB is stored as 'Other' which I gather is apparently artwork. So I'm going to do a restore to recover that space.

But first I'm trying to do a backup of my whole library (File/Library/Back up to disc) and inserted a blank 4.37GB DVD-R to backup 2.70GB of music, yet itunes backup tells me that 'The items in this backup will not fit on one disc. Do you want to backup to multiple disc?' Wtf, how can a 4.37gb disc not backup 2.70gb with space to spare? Also, I don't know if the backup will simply put the artwork back when I restore the backup to itunes. There's meant to be a function in itunes to disable artwork but it's not in mine. Can anyone throw any light on this?

edit: ok, all sorted. Restored ipod to factory and got my 1GB space back. :) Did backup discs but didn't need them. Nothing got erased from itunes as I thought it was meant to. Strangely, itunes restored my library to my ipod, AND I had unticked all songs in the library.
