Ordered the Asus GTX460 1GB with the Ultimate Viper and am now wondering if it will be able to handle games like Bad company, Mafia, medal of honour etc at max settings on a 23" @ 1920*1080?

I have already maxed my budget and can't really justifiy an extra £65 odd for the 470 but at the same time I'll be gutted it a £1300 system can't run these games at max settings.

youl struggle with max settings for mafia 2,you will need to do the physx tweaks to get that running with playable fps,id suggest you oc the nuts off the gtx,it will help, once you get spare cash buy another 1 for sli

lol PhysX. It'll be fine with most games, just turn PhysX off, it's a useless hog of resources.

A second card will increase the smoothness of the game but won't change the "shown" framerate. A single GTX460 will struggle in Mafia 2 at that res with max settings... it would even struggle at 1680x1050 with max settings, it will be playable but you will notice some slowdown.

Using the tweak to prevent PhysX cloth on NPCs tho will massively increase performance and smoothness and may make it perfectly playable on that card.

Thanks for the info. Will the 470 also struggle with Mafia?

Can you please provide a link for this tweak?

Cheers

2 minutes of Mafia 2 gameplay (so not 100% the same each run) at 1680x with all settings maxed (full PhysX):

"Simulated" GTX460 (I dialed down clocks until GPU-z showed same stats as a stock GTX460 1Gig) doing both rendering and PhysX.

Based on that I'd say your looking at around 45fps average at 1920x1080 - but with the NPC cloth tweak probably around 55+fps average.

Not really upto speed on the cloth tweak but theres a page on it here which I assume does the job in fullgame too http://physxinfo.com/news/3628/mafia-ii-demo-tweaking-physx-performance/

Thanks, thats really helpful. I can live with 45 fps. Seems like the sensibile option would be to upgrade the 460 in the next couple of years rather than going for the 470 right now.

I play mafia 2 with max settings at 1680x1050 with the 768mb with only physx turned off and it runs very smoothly even during high action scenes it doesnt dip that much and my system isnt great (athlon x3 with small overclock to 3.4 atm and 4th core unlocked). the 1gb should be fine at the slightly higher res if youve got a good system behind it. It depends on what you personally deem to be good framerates.

Yeah turning PhysX off will put out very smooth performance and a lot higher fps.

EDIT: Its not as much as I thought - doing a run now with PhysX off only increases average from 68 to 70fps, the "stutter" level is at 5 instead of 10 which means it would be quite a bit smoother to play tho.

Its quite a large drop. Everything high and physx off then I get average of 50 during the benchmark. With physx on high aswell, this goes into the low-mid 20s. Not tried any tweaks so I hope you have some luck with it.

As I had some time to kill heres a 1920x1080 max settings run

I couldn't actually tell any difference while playing in smoothness between it and the 1680x run - slightly higher average than I thought. Bare in mind I'm simulating a 460 as best I can with downclocking the 470 so its not 100% accurate but should be in the same ballpark.

The benchmark shows a bigger difference than actual gameplay. i.e. I get about a 40fps average in the benchmark but in actual gameplay I get around 80fps average (overclocked GTX470 + OC'd 260).
