Vaguely thinking of getting a bigger car in the next few months (small boy seems to fill my Fabia). Thinking about a few cars and not sure how much of a size upgrade to go for.

The shortlist looks something like, Focus, Mondeo, Mazda 3, Mazda 6, Skoda Octavia (possibly Honda Civic or Accord but not looked at them in detail yet).

Given that the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus are so similar, why do motoring mags (Parkers, What Car etc) rate the Mazda 3 considerably lower than the Focus as a used car? Budget would probably mean we're looking at 2-6 year old cars, depending on spec. Is it just you get more for your money with the Ford?

Purely on aesthetics I'd be inclined to go for the Mazda.

You talking about the Sport versions of each ?

having had both the focus is nicer inside and the 2.0 mazda 3 sport is thirsty but has loads of toys like HIDs, Bose cd Changed, LED lights etc.

the mazda was more reliable than my focus, but the focus feels like a sturdier car and you get more feedback the mazda could feel kinda detatched

Not particularly interested in the sports versions above the standard variants. Having said that, my one year old definitely showed a preference for sport variants when looking round dealerships the other day...
