I just went to look up something on their forum, instead I get a message indicating the service is being closed:

Dear GOG users,

We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We've debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.

On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All the best,
GOG.com Team

Ah well. 2 years of DRM-free, patched for Vista\x64 games store has come to an end. I hope CD Projeckt are still doing alright with conventional releases (The Witcher 2 for example)...

That's a real shame. I didn't see it coming at all. Hopefully their comment that "we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form." means the've got something new (or old :) ) lined up...

Definitely didn't see it coming, they'd only just released Age of Wonders a few days ago...

Terrible news. I feel lucky, I was debating on downloading a game from there for ages, just did it a few days ago.

Thats a real shame i thought they would have been doing well.

The Twitter comment they put up suggests it was a legal issue with publisher(s).

Good old games, drm free.

Online download service, most of the stuff reasonably priced.

Personaly thanking them for waxing no cd's on the pro pinball releases, for many years i juggled cd's between my base and laptops.

That is a MASSIVE shame and very sad.

Although, what did the future hold for them?

With people purchasing their "new" games on Steam and the like with unlimited downloads, they would not need to goto GOG to purchase the same "Old" games in 5 years time, if that makes sense?

Maybe that was part of the problem?

Maybe it was difficult getting "new" games on the service as these "old" games were allready on other digital download services.

What happens with peoples accounts will be watched VERY carefully I would assume.

Well for a start they were in the middle of a promotion and were continuing to add classic games to their catalogue.

The clue's in the name, they didn't deal with recent games and their price levels would never satisfy publishers for that anyway. $9.99 and $5.99 aren't price points you'd expect on a recent release.

Steam releases aren't usually patched to work with Vista\x64 platforms, often don't come with extras and still require you to be logged in to begin with. GOG's popularity stemmed in major part from its DRM-free approach - which seems to have been what got it shut down.

Just found a Reddit post linking to a Polish finance group page, it looks legit to me...

Michał Kiciński from their PR department wrote on a Polish business discussion forum:

Uwaga, data konferencji to pewnie 22gi sroda wczesnym wieczorem. Informacja o tym wkrotce na GOG.com (prosze nie robic paniki po przeczytaniu informacji tam umieszczonych:)

Which translates to:

Please note, the conference date is 22nd, Wednesday, early evening. We'll post information about it on GOG.com (please don't panic when you'll read the information we'll post there:)

i think he means as new games become "old" in years to come everyone would still have them on steam and not be using gog to replace lost disks etc.

I only had 3 games on there, probably spent £15. Yeah, not as dire as, say, if Steam closed (), but still... :(
