I did a quick search and see a few things on this and it appears they are good if you have the time and dedication to do them.

I'm fed up of where I currently work and need to do something to try and better myself so have been looking at courses.

One thing that always bugged me was the D in Maths I got when leaving school.

I did look at doing it again on a part time course in college but some said when I asked before it was possibly a bit of a waste as being 25 now its a big step backwards.

What I have come across is the Starting Maths which is a bit below what I should be doing and then the "Discovering mathematics" course.

During the course, you will learn about:
key ideas in mathematics, including some statistics, algebra, geometry and trigonometry
mathematical vocabulary and notation introduced and developed in the course
selection and use of mathematical techniques for solving problems
interpretation of results in the context of real life situations
simple mathematical arguments
how to explain mathematical ideas from the course in writing
development of skills in learning mathematics
use of relevant ICT tools for learning and for working on mathematical problems
describing problems mathematically
analysing mathematical reasoning.

Its around 20 weeks to do which isn't to bad I guess although says you can do it quicker if you want to.

Would this be an OK step to take? I think its something more for me at the minute and open more possibilities with the future courses I can take from the OU.

I am starting an OU course in February ( BSc in Physics ), I know a few people that have completed courses at the OU and have had only good things to report.

As you say if you take the time and have the dedication, you should excel.

Good luck.

Do it, I'm just finishing my 2nd course now and have really enjoyed both. Some of them will be quite demanding so be prepared to lose some of your spare time (or a lot if its T216 - CCNA)

I've just withdrawn from my OU course, due to being offered a uni place. I was doing the 'Discovering Mathematics" too. It seemed to be good value for money, its a good step up :)

On my second course, aiming for a degree one day.

The materials and tutors so far have been fantastic. The courses I'm doing you get an optional lecture or workshop every 4-5 weeks so it's not completely from home either.

What was the reason you took it in the first place? What were you hoping to get out of it?

I'm just about to finish an OU degree (Information Technology and Computing), got one module left because I made a mistake when choosing my path through it.
If you're looking to progress with the OU I'd say it's definitely a good starting place. That kind of module will probably be accepted as credit towards lots of qualifications (most courses allow you 30 points or so of free choice). It wouldn't serve as a replacement for a GCSE though - you might be better off looking for a part-time GCSE course.
Definitely worth doing though, I love the OU :)

I was looking to study Engineering, and needed to top up my Maths skills. I got a B at GCSE, but I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it, as well.
