Hey everyone,

I'm looking at my options for a 1080p source and have gotten into a bit of a quandry as to whether I go for a PS3 or something like a dedicated Blu-ray player.

I'm basing this on personal opinion - that a dedicated blu-ray player will upscale better than a PS3 will, but of course, I lose the ability to play PS3 games or I'll have to eventually get a PS3 anyway (although I am a PC gamer rather than a Console gamer).

Given the option, which would you go for? There is a nice bundle for £130 that includes 6 Blu-ray movies and a Samsung Blu-ray player which is quite tempting.

All help greatly appreciated as always,

Kind Regards,

David

I have a PS3 and it upscales brilliantly. Some good quality DVDs look almost like Blu-rays at times.

Really great system, and the 3.50 update will make it a 3D blu-ray too.

Just had the same dilemma. As I really didn't think I'd play on the PS3 that much I opted for the dedicated blu-ray player.

As long as you buy a decent mid-tier one it will upscale better. New Sony, LG and Panasonics get good reviews in the £180ish bracket. Sony players probably edge out the others but as the Panasonic is the better TV and I was buying both I got that.

Is your PC (in sig) located near the TV?

If so, you can pick up a Blu Ray player like this, use the included PowerDVD 8 Software and be playing Blu-Rays for £46.

The PS3 is OK. Oddly enough the upscaling provided by the PlayTV for freeview seems to work better than the DVD upscaling! IMO anyways.

If you're absolutely sure that you'll buy and play games for the PS3, then it's a very capable blu-ray player and upscales well. If you won't really buy any games for it then it's a very expensive way to watch blu-ray and upscale DVD's.

I like to think of the PS3 has a HTPC: there is so much it can do. Apart from playing back Blu-Rays (which it does very well if I may add) & gaming, it plays & stores your other video & audio formats (simply upgraded mine to a 500GB HD for that). Also, thanks to its networking capabilities, you can stream media to it & use its built-in web browser to surf (iPlayer, etc).

Hey everyone,

Owing to my previous history with my consoles - not playing my Wii or my PS2 an awful lot, I ended up going for a Sony BDP-S370 which I found for £139.95 along with £39.99 for a mid-range HDMI cable.

Overall, I'm pleased with all this, plus that Blu-Ray player is a 5/5 award winner.

I best put a piccie up on the 'Show your hi-fi gear thread'!

Kind Regards,

David

You paid £40 for an HDMI cable?

...and £139.95 for the S370!!

Jeeee sus

I don't think I've done too badly...all the local shops near me were selling the S370 for £180 and as for the cable, I was umming about a £20 HDMI cable but then thought **** it and I thought I will just spend £30-£40 on one.

Plus I was too lazy to do any real shopping around and I wanted it all set up today!

Kind Regards,

David
