As we all know, USB 3.0 has been a big talking point this year, with Intel recently announcing that it will support the standard there has been a lot of products with integrated USB 3.0 - ASUS are proud to announce that they are the first to offer USB 3.0 support from the front panel, not just from the rear I/O.

Rumour has it that ASUS are currently working with some major chassis manufacturers to cater for front panel USB 3.0 ports and some ASUS motherboards will feature an NEC bridge chip to support up to two front panel USB 3.0 headers.

Great news.

I had a Gigabyte motherboard with USB3 and a Verbatim USB3 external HDD. Windows 7 kept coming up saying that I needed to plug it into a USB3 port to get the extra speed  funny that because it IS plugged into the USB3 port (the blue ones). USB3 drivers installed and the BIOS correctly set. I even re-installed Windows and got the same problem.

Now, I have since replaced my motherboard (for other reasons) for an ASUS one. Guess what......same problem

so in my case, USB3 is no faster than USB2 :p

usb is upto 10x faster than usb2 so instead of 32mb/s max transfer speed of usb2 it will be well over 250mb/s so now you can have hdd's connected externally and they will run about the same speed as if it was connected via a sata port on the motherboard internally.

I hope more case manufacturers include USB3 ports on the front panels. All usb3 boards i've seen only have usb2 headers, the usb3 ports are on the rear connections:( was hoping some manufacturers would have 1 on the back and 1 header.

Interesting to hear about this bridge to allow 2 headers, would where i can read more info.

NEC is currently the only usb3 chip maker with chips at retail, the chip only supports 2 ports, there are 2+ more manufacturers that will have usb3 chips out within 4 months so the prices will be dropping from $15 to $2 per usb3 chip from NEC as a result of competition. I hope some manufacturers can create a chip that can handle 4 ports!

Synopsys has prototyped an HDTV transmission system based on 3.0. The company has demonstrated transmission of non-compressed 1080p at 30fps HDTV via 3.0.

Apple has anticipated 3.0 with built-in capabilities with the iPhone. There is firmware on the iPhone to facilitate connecting your laptop computer to the phone via a usb 3.0 sata hdd dock connection. The iPhone can then be used as wireless modem for the computer. Apple says that this capability exists with the iPhone 3.0 OS, but details still need to be negotiated with carriers.

At least one laptop manufacturer is already integrating the new connector into their system. The latest versions of the Asus M50 laptop come equipped with 2 ports that are ready for the additional contacts. Asus has framed their system for 3.0, but the full system is not yet in place.
