2011 Mustang V6

Boring question time, but what is the boot space like on these? Can you fit a couple a suitcases in?

Small ones, perhaps. For the last couple of years i have had to put one on the back seats. Comparable to a BMW E46 cabrio boot i would say as an example. The roof compartment steals a lot of the space.

Fox - I'm going over to Florida for Christmas. Having never driven in the US I'd like to know how you found it? Easy to adapt etc?

For some unknown reason I'm getting myself worked up thinking it's going to be a nightmare.

Driving in America is easier than driving back home IMHO, its super simple.

Honestly it's incredibly easy, especially in automatics. Drove on right, stop pedal go pedal. That's about it :p

Seriously easy, their roads are huge, multi lane, different lane for each direction, clear signage. Dont worry about it :)

Excellent :)

I googled some 'how to drive in America' sites last week. One of the first said not to drive on the freeway for fear of death!

Quite looking forward to it now. Just need to find a half decent rental.

Over here it is a different story. The absolute cheapest low spec ~200bhp model on autotrader, at nearly 5 years old, is £10,000. Its also in scotland, the home of the oddball bottom of the market autotrader example.

Equally you can pick up a good 5 year/40k S197 V8 with 300bhp~ and the premium pack for about £13k-£15k if you are prepared the wait a couple of weeks for one to come up.

£13-15k buys a lot of other metal though, that same money would see you in a 5 year old BMW M3 as an example. Not to mention all the other great stuff you can buy of varying ages.

Good read there.

Is that last pic at Hoover Dam ?

Death Valley is one of the most stunning places I have ever been and there was a rare cool front when I went there at 29 degrees.

15k for a 5 year old Ford? You just proved his point.

Your looking at just the badge though. It's a 4.6l V8 muscle car with 300bhp and very rare (at least compared with an e46 M3).

Wasn't aware you could buy a decent 05 plate e46 M3 for £13k-£15k though?

No, I am looking at the whole car as a package, whereas you just look at the 'V8 Muscle Car' thing.

As a package its very much cheap and cheerful - this is good when the pricepoint reflects this as it does in the US. It doesnt, however, over here.

You can buy 300bhp 5 year old Mercedes and BMW Coupes for that £15k. I'm not saying you should, but it puts it in perspective.

Whereas in the USA, you'd need much more to buy a same aged Merc.

Out of interest what 300bhp~ BMW and Merc coupes could you buy for £15k? I'm assuming we're talking about the M3 (are good ones that cheap now?) and no idea which Merc?

I think if you look hard enough and are patient the odd 2005 plate M3 CS does pop up in the 15-18k region which are nice cars.

It depends what you want, 13k is considered a bargain for a V8 S197 Mustang, gotta remember most people buy Mustangs for a hobby and half the enjoyment comes from turning a poor-adequate car into a great one, even more so when your doing it yourself. :)

Problem is that stock 15-18k M3 CS will run circles around a stock V8 S197 Mustang. If you sort the handling on the Mustang, brakes plus suspension ideally budget for 2k-3k to do so unless your going to cut corners. Then if your a good driver you will keep up with an M3 CS, but the M3 is easier to drive faster as its more forgiving closing to the limit.

Without going into too much detail my current requirements for a new car are £15k~ budget, RWD and 300bhp~ hence why I have considered a Mustang (dream car - but can't get insured due to LHD) and a 335i. No requirements for practicallity, running costs, number of seats, age, mileage or anything else really.

Just got back from doing a very similar trip - and we saw loads of mustangs, I thought it odd that the vast majority were the 2011 model, but just meant that they were mostly rentals. Saw loads in that blue colour which I thought was an awesome colour - may well have seen you!

We rented the even more commonplace Dodge Charger and the surprisingly exclusive Dodge Challenger. American road trips really are awesome.
