Car on finance & insurance as one package?

I noticed that too! What an absolute rip off. My Dad came over today, he recons I should save up and buy a Peugeot 106 (2001) for £1.5K ish. I did the insurance quote and still might as well get the Puma! :P

Can you imagine in 2015 still paying for this years insurance ?

Make sure you're adding parents as named drivers etc. as it will likely cut a big chunk off your quotes. They seem pretty high to me for a 22 year old female, unless you have a really bad postcode.

Ouch, i'm not sure what you doing there, last year (22 yeas old, male, 0 ncb, no named drivers).

I insured a 1.8 Laguna for 700 with direct line. Try other insurers.

Stick you mum on there or your grandma!

Do yourself a favour and get the Puma. New car with insurance deals will pay some towards the cost of the insurance if you are under 25, but as you have found out, its all stacked in favour of the finance company/dealer.

How about a golf?

A 1.4 puma is relatively high on insurance at group 9, whereas a 1.6 civic is group 6. a 1.4 focus is group 4, but that must be spiteful to drive :)

Whats your budget for a car? Can you put someone else on your insurance? BF/SO?

I'd love a golf but I didn't even let the thought of having one enter my mind, I assumed they would be a big no-no insurance wise?

How do you find out what group the insurance is for cars? I wasn't even aware of this.. doh.

I didn't want to spend more than £500 for my first car but my Dad has said I should spend at least £1k, so my budget will be £1k but I need to now save up! :( not good at saving.

My bf doesn't drive so can't add him, neither does my Mum or sister. There is only my Dad but I've already asked if the insurance can go in his name and then add me as a named driver but he wont, he said I cant do this anyway as we don't live at the same address. What are the rules if I insure it my name but then add my Dad?

Insurance in your name and adding your dad is fine, insurance in your dads name and you added and actually being the main driver is a form of fraud called fronting.

Ignore insurance groups. At 17 a 1.8 Ford Mondeo was less to insure than a 1.2 Saxo - because no 17 year olds crash Mondeo's so the statistics told them to not charge as much. Every 17 year old crashes a Saxo.

Don't add your boyfriend anyway - young lad will push your insurance up loads.

Got any older women you can add who drive - grandparents or aunty? Will usually bring the quote down and your not doing anything wrong as your adding them as cover - just incase!

Drop down boexs there^:

Bare in mind, insurance groups aren't everything, the car could be a low insurance group, but it could be a common car for young drivers to stack, so that will push the price up, some cars with higher insurance groups, might be cheaper to insure in the long run.

Have you done the quote as just passed or as a learner driver? Have you also considered pass plus? When I did it, I made almost double back in insurance savings than it cost.

Wow that's expensive, bit out of the loop but this years prices for everyone seems to have gone up the wazoo. I started driving at 23(now 26), '93 astra and insurance was £300. (FIRST TIME DRIVER!). I don't think the age of the car mattered much?

I guess it's your location and the current times, I'd have thought being female would lower it a little :(

Chris, I have 3Yrs NCB at 21 and a e30 325i touring is £1000 still, with multicar to reduce it, garaged and in the best postcode type.

For reference, i have my 1.1 fiesta with no ncb (it's on the bmw), 3 years experience and no accidents and the multicar discount for £500. (30 mile each way commute so 50mpg is much more palatable than 20 :p)

So, if I add my Dad on my insurance, I'd be adding him as a named driver right? And what will that involve for him, will HIS insurance increase or be affected in any way? Say I had an accident, what would that do to his insurance? He has 6yrs no claims and no points on his license and I wouldn't wanna wreck that for him.

I do have an Auntie who might be willing to help me, but again, what will it involve for her? (She doesn't have her own car at the moment but she does share one with her husband)

How many named drivers can you have?

Sorry for all the questions! I love this forum :)

I'm doing the quotes as being passed for 3 months as theres no way I'll save up in time to buy a car the minute after I pass. I have heard about pass plus but again, I'm not clued up on what you have to do. Also, my sisters BF is 22 and has a 1.1 Corsa, he has a pass plus but still pays around £1000 for his insurance. He passed when he was 20 but only started driving a year ago.

I think my home details are increasing the price as some of you have mentioned. I have to park on the street and I'm literally a 5 min drive from the city centre, I live in an area full of students (if that makes a difference)

Yes.

No, it will simply mean he is covered to drive your car.

Say I had an accident, what would that do to his insurance?

It would have zero effect on him, unless you are also named on his policy, but these are seperate things.

What's it got to do with your dad's insurance? It's your policy so if your dad crashes your car as a named driver your insurance will go up, your insurance has nothing to do with his.

It's always better to do your own policy but if you went on his as a named driver and crashed he may lose his NCB.

I paid £1700 for mine so don't think you have it that bad.

Speak to your driving instructor about pass plus. Its well worth doing. The reason your sisters BF is paying so much is because he is a bloke driving a stereotypical boy racer car, or at least thats how the insurance company sees it. If he had a mondeo, he would likely pay less believe it or not.

if you go here you can get a bit more info on pass plus.

Whilst this is the case in isolated examples, generally it is a bit of an urban myth.

Indeed, I didn't find that to be the case at all really, virtually any small hatchback was cheaper to insure vs an equivalent large hatch/saloon. (ie. not a Clio 172 vs a Mondeo 1.8D)
