My neice has just bought home an independent NUS leaflet from the college about keeping your self secure on the dark winter nights.. :)

High powered torch:
Buying one is also a good idea - both so you can see and for self defense - you can blind someone in a darkly lit area by shining it in their eyes - that would hopefully give you a little more time to react, if the torch is big enough they make good batons too. Be careful though - if you use pepper spray or bash your would be attacker with a torch you may be up on assault charges.

Doesn't this just ERK you? If some ones trying to attack you WHY should you stop and think "Hmmm how far can i go?" If the guy is attacking you f him! Kick him while hes down, beat the ever loving S out of him! Serves the little GOIT right in my book! BLOODY RELIGION!! that has nothing to do with this artical..i just dont like relegion!

That's the way it is now.

No it's not, you have all the right in the world to use reasonable force people have even stabbed and killed attackers and not been charged.

yes they are arrested after all you've just beaten/killed a guy it would be insane to let you off because you claim he attacked you first.

but once they know what happened if the force was reasonable you will be let off.

****ing daily mail readers.

"Yes officier, like i said i was trying to rape this woman and she clonked me on the head with her torch. I might never rape again, my favourite hobby is ruined! Compensation please."

Perhaps because as time progresses our desire for retribution and vengeance has grown/evolved into something else? Instead of an emotional, primal urge to bring wrath upon a wrongdoer, we try to assess what is an appropriate response to neutralise the danger and then bring the transgresser to some medium of justice (i.e. Police)?

Also, it's covering their back and alerting you to the danger that you may very well receive assault charges (which is surely a good thing).

No, it doesn't erk me at all, for I have some measure of control over my emotions.

What is this country coming to? People jumping to conclusions all the time.

What it means is that you MAY be up on assault charges. You can't batter somebody with a torch if they run off with your soft drink, for example.

Lets see you keep cool when your mugged. I was mugged when i was 15 its the worse thing that can happen to you. If you were a girl imagine some one coming upbehind you on a dark night and trying to rape you. are u sure you could keep your measure of control over your emotions? Talking as a guy i would LOVE to be rapped by a blonde girl! Its not the same for girls tho from what i am told.

almost as bad as when a burglar hurts himself in someones house he has broken into, then sues for damages/compensation.

I think something like a Fenix L2D or LD20 would make a pretty good 'rape alarm'. They are so bright it's painful to be inline with the light and an attacker would never be able to see to make or complete an attack in the dark. It would literally blind them at arms length or further, leaving plenty of time to run away.

No, I'm not sure that I could keep my control. I'd like to think so, and I believe that I would try to. But whether or not I may or may not in a hypothetical situation could control said emotions is irrelevant.

I've been in a few fights in my time and have always kept my cool. My emotions are a tool, I try not to let them control me.

Besides, that doesn't change the fact that you should only use appropriate measures, and that the law allows you that freedom. Anything more is excessive and you are liable for the consequences. Yes, circumstances are taken, or should be taken into account and I'd hope that you'd be charged differently to someone who just went around beating on people, but you'd still have to accept the consequences. "I was angry from being attacked" does not give you a reason, excuse nor right to cause excessive harm to someone.

Are you talking about the guy a few years back in Newcastle? Who Broke into a house and a home-made trap (or something) went off and damaged his back?-_-

My parents were told to take down barbwire years ago from their wall (well over 16feet high. Incase it hurt some one. the only people who could have got up there would have needed a stepladder lol

You mean it's not true?

Damn, shouldn't have let that big black man rape me. :(
