anybody here have diabetes?

Biggest change for me has to be the dreaded hypos. *Shudders*
Yeah, I was also in November

I'm staying abroad now, so unfortunately insulin isn't free for me anymore and can't get it shipped :(
Bummer. Nothing on Tesco's website? :p Staying anywhere nice and is it permanent?

also forgot to add what made you go for a test?
The typical symptoms. Was peeing a lot, then needing a drink, then peeing more. Was managing to pee 4-5+ an hour. My hands and wrists were getting very, very dry and flaky due to all the hand drying. :p Would wake up in the night needing a pee but with a dry mouth. Which to sort out first?!

Went for a blood test and the surgery informed me of the result the next working day when it should have been a week at least!

Type 2 diabetes = generally obese and/or elderly people tend to get this type.

Type 1 diabetes = genetic, or unknown cause if not genetic.

This used to be what people / doctors thought but lately has found to be untrue / not always the case.

Type 1 is an autoimmune disease (if they find it early enough they can do a blood test and see the antibodies that are killing the cells) whether this is genetic the jury is still out.

Type 2 is genetic but life style has a large part to play. Being over weight is a factor but not the only one. Not a lot of people seem to realise that type 2 diabetes might infact help make you overweight. The body will tell the diabetic to eat as it has no energy, when infact it has but can't use it because the insulin needed to move it into cells is lacking in some way or not working.

Main reason for not being able to ship is because goods in cargo hold can freeze and destroy the insulin. Here in Malaysia its very easy - don't need any prescriptions and can buy as many needles as I need - unlike having to request manually every 2 weeks ! Not sure how long I'm staying here yet - will see :)

I'm type 2 (and a porker!).

Currently able to manage it purely thru diet and losing weight (slowly I admit).

Type 1, Diagnosed @ 17..

I guess it has changed my life somewhat.. My diet is different to most peoples (low - carb) so no rice, pasta, bread etc.. and of-course there are the numerous daily injections and blood tests but to be fair after a while they become 2nd nature. Hypo's are scary but not something to worry about if you have good control...

Diabetes doesn't have to run your life BUT you can not ignore it.. his life will change if he is diagnosed as diabetic but its not a disaster.

Diagnosed with type 1 when i was 11, was falling a sleep after school, had to leave a lesson 3-6 times for a pee which got the teachers mad and would mean i would have to hold it often.
It was my parents that made me get a check up. I am not fat though thankyou to whomever sterio types. :P

Been diabetic now for over 10 years which is a scary thought. It does not change your life much you just have to think about stuff. I can actually eat what i want as i am on a differant way of controlling it. :)

Are those self test diabetes kits from the chemist any good?
The ones where you stick the strip into your urine and watch if the colour changes?

My gf has it and has done since she was about 4.

As long as you test your blood a few times aday and make sure your levels are ok then it shouldn't impact your life too much.

Steve Redgrave is diabetic!

It depends do you mean at the moment or in life? I don't so much atm as I have had quite a stable day to day routine makes it easier to control though i can still get them at around mid afternoon.

It is when i am at uni or something where my day changes constantly so my eating times vary etc. Thats when the worst ones strike. :p

I was diagnosed Type 2 in Feb'09 - At first it was a big shock and seemed somewhat life changing - but it's not really. Just have to be mindful of what I'm eating and drinking etc.

Basically, exercise and a good (controlled) diet and I'm fine. But that's exactly as most should be doing with Diabetes.

Personally, Metformin is the only way sometimes I can keep it in check I'm having a bad time but the rest of the time it's the above.

FYI - I'm anything but a porker. I'm more like a half finished BBQ spare rib.
