Hi guys, just received my new asus top 460 768mb, after sending back my palit 768mb version due to capacitor whine.
And yet again i get a card that has a capacitor whine, kinda thought asus would use better components but i guess i was wrong.

Iv read online many ways to try and fix it, different power leads and such, iv tried all that, even tried putting my system back to stock, the whine actually got worse when my cpu was stock. Even more high pitched then before.

So its defiantly not my psu, its 100% coming from the card, iv done abit of testing with a few games and benchmarks, and there is no noticeable whine when loaded up by them, but there is when i use F@H GPU client, and as this card was bought for folding and light gaming, kinda negates the use of it if i can't fold due to the noise, it folds quiet (25% fan, all be it abit rattly) and cool (mid 50c's-60c's).

Is it just an Nvida thing or something that there cards have capacitor whine a lot, not trying to knock them as im not loyal to either brand, but when iv folded on my old 5770, there was no cap whine at all, ok it ran hot, and is useless at folding.

Guess its another card getting sent back to OCuk, im sure they will be sick of me soon enough lol, not to sure if i will bother with trying to get a 3rd or not, i'll have to see.

Hi

I have a GTX465, was a ATI fan for about 1 year and came back to NVIDIA and I too suffer from the dreaded Whine, but mine is coming from the PSU. I have a new PSU coming today and will let you know how I get on.

You could go for the MSI version, military grade caps and all.....might reduce the noise.

Yeh i was originally going to go for the MSI cyclone, after my refund from the palit, but saw the asus on offer, and well asus are a quality brand, but hey ho.

But it will be sent back due to the whine and the rattly fan, its even noiser then the palit was, runs cooler mind, but for me the noise is the key factor.

Hope your new psu sorts your problems out.

I think it's got to be something to do with CUDA apps personally.

My MSI has that noise when crunching SETI or Folding.

However when using it for gaming it never makes that noise no matter the load the card is under.

I can stress the card to death in OCCT or Furmark, or loop Unigine or whatever for hours on end and it'll never make the squealing noise.

Fire up SETI and it's there instantly (not loud, but you can hear it if you put your head near the case).

Yeh im kinda thinking the same thing to Hex, just done futher testing, no game, or benchmark is causing the whine, unlike the palit i had before, even games did it lol. So at least the asus is better then that.

I have noticed that the whine is more constant/louder using the F@H tray client, i don't use really, but thought id test with it, using the normal console client, its still there but not as loud.

Think i'll do some re-organizing and see if its noticeable with my case on the floor under my table, just gotta route around the house to see if we have any wood spare, as it will be going onto carpet.

You dont say you have tested with another psu? If its not the gfx card (and quite possibly not having tested two diff cards) it would more likely be a capacitor on the mobo next to the gfx slot.

You need to test the card in another machine to be sure.
