To Rojones mentioning Steam stats and Xbox Live Stats.

Because Steam is able to track everybody playing on PC...

OK, if you think that you're a moron. Go back to thinking Halo is the best FPS ever.

Half Life > Halo.

Half life 2 is the best FPS game ever but I can't quite see why everyone keeps mentioning Halo. OK, it's one of the games that you can't get on the PC but most of other games are multiplatform anyway? For me, Crysis was the last proper PC game. It's not as though there is still a stream of PC exclusive FPS games.

I didn't like Halo, i labelled it as a poor attempt to take Half Lifes crown when i was younger.

But games like halo are in addition to the multiplatform games, not instead of them. Even the new stalker is multiplatform.

CoD4 still stands strong on Xbox 360. 15k plus regulars. 2007?

Oh well. I'd like to see how many are still playing MW2 in 2 years time. CoD4 was the FPS game, it had its flaws but it was good fun. MW2 is Activisions major push into trashy annual releases. I'd sooner play MW than MW2.

I play MW on PC and MW2 on PS3. MW2 was mainly bought because a few people from work play it. I haven't been too interested in Black Ops so far.

as already said, the number of people playing Halo Reach is irrelevant, its a new game thats just come out.

so of course more people are going to be playing it.

try checking the figures in a couple of months.
when all the kiddies got bored of playing it.

if you have Game A that come out this week, and Game B thats been out for a year, then comparing how many sales both had this week, and saying Game A is the more popular Game

Indeed. CSS was released like...6 years ago? And yet 50k people are still playing it. I would be impressed if any console game can match the life span of a PC game.

That's not really a desirable thing though for publishers is it? You don't want everyone playing the same game for 6 years, you want them buying new versions from you every year. (With the obvious exception of subscription games)

For the publishers/developers? Of course not, they will try anything and everything to get all they can from a franchise *cough* COD *cough* FIFA. For the customer on the other hand, a few mods here and there to enhance the game play is always welcome! Which is the real reason as to why COD:MW2 never got dedicated servers, so they could fool people into buying the map packs.

The point I was making is the fact that console games will never have a community like that, with those kind of mods. Instead they are forced to buy extra content that should have been in the game at release, with out any choice or suggestion of what the content should be.

Maybe I am being a bit 1 sided as I don't play on consoles any more, but that's how I see it.

Obviously but that implies those people are playing that game and nothing but. All they're interested in is money, they don't even care anymore if the game they created is actually any good, particularly Activision. And 2k have gone downhill at light speed since Borderlands if Mafia 2 is anything to go by.

If you churned out a new Diablo game every year then i can say with almost 100% certainty that it would be utterly dreadful and most people with any sense would continue playing Diablo 2 and maybe get burned once or twice on the newer ones before never buying them again. Valve seem to have 'crafting' a game down to a t it takes them that long between releases and basically everything they release is pure gold and will be remembered long after MW2 has burned and died.
