Job Interview at ITV Sport. Help please :)

Obviously, but are you telling me that I shouldn't be knowledgeable about certain sports when going for a job at ITV Sport? Can't hurt can it.

Thanks for the question suggestions.

Depends in what role. Only a pundit would need to know those facts off hand surely. Most sports cameramen on the other hand won't be that knowledgeable about sport seeing as they'll be contract and/or employed by a diverse OB unit.

Might it be worth checking on what funding ITV get from the TV Licence Fee? Another question that I'd be tempted to ask if I were ITV Sport is "if we could aim for any other sporting events apart from the current portfolio then what should we go for?" or perhaps if they don't ask a similar question then you could flip it and ask them if what other sports they might be displaying soon.

Make sure you have prepared reply to the age-old "Can you tell us of a time you had to show leadership abilites/work in a team/were in an under-pressure situation" cliche interview question?

It's an utterly useless question, but I've known far too many places that seem to think it genuinely provides an insight into your character.

EDIT: And I highly doubt you'll be asked for your opinion on the England football team, or Michael Schumacher.

Be expected to be asked what you can bring to them - what you have to offer and give examples of what you have done before - if anything relevant.

Why do you want to do this internship - what do you want to become in the end? - this is finding out how much of the industry you know and what research you have done.

Well done and good luck! :)

As it turns out the most important preparation I did was the trivia! They gave me a questionnaire to fill out after the interview all about football! I think the interview went really well, probably give it a 8/10. It didn't help when he started talking about pundits and I couldn't remember what ones represent ITV / BBC! I hear back from them tomorrow or Thursday, already got into the last 10 out of 150 so I'm rather chuffed :)

Oh no they haven't! ;)

On a point of pedantry you'd be right, technically they've only won the Champions League 3 times but they've won the European Champions' Club Cup a further 6 times. So if you're not being unduly exacting about it then it's 9 wins of the premier European club competition whatever it was called at the time. :p

//edit glad the interview went well, let us know how you get on.

Thanks for all the effort explaining the structure and what questions were actually asked, after all the typing people did here to try and help you :o. Media types eh ;).

...I was in a rush and dinner was being served up. I'll edit this and give you more detail in a sec! Interview was with the Director of ITV sport btw:eek:

Here goes...

Arrived at 2pm outside the ITV building which is HUGE! It's located just outside Waterloo so it was easy to find. A woman came down to get me from reception and took me upstairs and introduced me to the Director of ITV Sport. I was sat down and told that they would be asking me questions for 25-30 mins. Some of the questions they covered were

Why do you want to work for ITV?

Give us an example of when you influenced a production.

What was your opinion on ITV's coverage of the world cup?

What do you think of ITV's pundits?

What are your expectations of the Internship?

Where do you feel as if you would fit in, what is your particular area of interest?

I finished the interview by showing them some of my final year work from university including my dissertation and final year film. I then asked them questions and finally was asked to fill in a questionnaire which had 10 questions on! I got 9/10 correct and the annoying thing is I knew the blooming answer to the one I got wrong! Some of the questions on the questionnaire were:

Who scored a hat-trick last Sunday for Manchester United and where is he from?

Who won the Champions League in 2010 and who was their manager?

Where will the Champions league final be held this year?

Who did Arsenal play last week in the CL and what was the score?

Who is ITV's presenter and lead commentator?

Which English team reached the Uefa cup final last year?

What was the score of the World Cup final?

Which 2 players missed penalties last year at the world cup?

Who is currently top of the Championship and who is their manager?

Can't remember the other one!

Hope that pleases you Robbie!

Not exactly. I wrote in to ITV months ago with my C.V asking for a job and heard no reply. Then randomly one day ITV e-mailed me telling me that they are going to open a position up for a intern in the sports department. They had 150 applicants which they narrowed down to 10 who were all interviewed today.

The surprising thing is that you didn't need any qualifications! I'm guessing my degree in Film and TV and Media Studies A-level helped though!

I'm not expecting to get the job but if I did it would be incredible! I'll keep you guys updated but as I say, I only have a 10% chance of getting it!
