I have 2 gtx 460's turning up today and im a little worried on what will happen if my psu cant handle the extra power?

it wont blow up or anything will it? lol or start smoking etc...

will my corsair hx 620w handle 2 gigabyte 1gb gtx 460's??

Hi TerrorBird :)

will my corsair hx 620w handle 2 gigabyte 1gb gtx 460's??

depending if the cards are overclocked or not and the rest of your system spec it seems a "quality" 600watt + PSU should be fine! . . . looks around 500 watts full system load . . .

GTX460 SLI Power Consumption

Does your PSU have four x 6-pin PCI-E power cables or are you using adapters?

fair chance if it hasnt got enough power you'll get no display on the monitor.

with the adapters remember too run them off a seperate lead to your water cooling etc.

keep an eye out for program failures etc if it does power up, in case its drawing power causing issues with your overclock etc.

ok iv got 1 setup so far, I have the 1st graphics card powerd off adaptors which come from a single dedicated power lead from the psu.

so.. alltogether i will be powering..

5x antec 120mm fans on there lowest setting.
1x antec 200mm on its medium setting
12V Laing DDC-1T Pro 10W watercooling pump
4x 250gb seagate barracuda hdd's
Creative x-fi xtreme music
2 sticks of ram
2 gtx 460's 1gb (wont be overclocked)
dvdrw

usb devices -

g15 keyboard
g500 mouse
Logitech mic

my cpu is running at 1.328v

sounds like its really pushing.. il find out soon enough. im just popping round my dads to pick up the sli cable.

well its a success! Everything seems to run brilliantly! so far so good

1 gtx 460 gave me a 3dmark vantage gpu score of 13231
2 gtx 460 is now giving me a gpu score of 24807

i noticed the fps to be JUST under double of what a single card was giving me. :) lituraly by a thew fps.

They are only what 160W stock, but keep in mind that if you overclock as soon as you start whacking the voltage up the wattage goes through the roof and can easily use more than a 470gtx, quite a bit more, both heavily overclocked MIGHT run the psu too hard.

Overclocking as far as they go without voltage increase probably won't push the wattage too high, its generally the voltage and not the actual core speed that causes the power increase.

Not likely to have anything dramatic happen. Either PC won't fire up at all or more likely it will boot fine but suddenly switch off during gaming. In rare cases you may shorten the life of the PSU or some components due to power irregularities if the PSU is running right on the edge but it should still fail gracefully.

Agree with your sentiment, but the wise man builds his house upon the rock.

Thats true.

Over the years I've seen quite easily over 100 people kill their systems due to overloading or skimping on a PSU for more powerful system components. Most only learn the hard way though!

Agreed.

Better safe than sorry and a good psu can also last several builds. :)

well i have had this psu since it came out, a good thew years ago since corsair decided to go the psu route.

I will learn "the hard way" when it happens. Until then, this setup should last me a a while!

You'll be fine, i've powered a ton from my Corsair 620 and it's never batted an eyelid. ;)
