I've finally decided to setup a blog to document what I do online but I'm looking for recommendations for a theme that looks slick and fits in with the theme.

The site is WorkSmarterNotHarder.org.uk and I've currently just put up basic template that I knocked together with Artisteer.

Key thing is that the tmese must be free :D

Have you tried Google? There are loads of free templates out there, and there are also lots at Wordpress.org:
http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

I would strongly suggest you look for one that supports the new custom menu feature that came along in version 3 of Wordpress:

There seem to be 27 of them at wordpress.org. Which one you choose of course depends on what sort of impression you want your blog to convey. They have varying degrees of customisation possible, and varying features.

BTW the current theme is hard on my eyes - all that bright orange - but I'm sure EasyJet would approve. :)

LOL, thanks for the feedback on the current theme! I appreciate it is a bit "in your face"

I had googled for themes but there are millions out there so I was looking more for recommendations that people had come across.

He is self-hosting, as you can't use your own theme at wordpress.org, so I don't think he he has a Dashboard in the way that Wordpress.com blogs do, and I suspect he can't preview the themes.

However making a child theme is an excellent suggestion if he can find one which is more or less what he wants, and understands how to do it! I believe themes with Microformats are particularly suited and Lo! TwentyTen is one of them.

If he looks at the themes with both Custom Menus and Microformats that bring it down to 25, a manageable number to play with.

Hopefully he has a test system at home - if he downloads a theme I think he can then preview it on his test system. You can preview them at Wordpress.org but with a standard blog rather than your own one.

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback.

I've done some searching for replacement themes and tried a few different alternatives.

How do people think that the one I've now activated looks?

Except for the image I think it's excellent. The image is really hard on my eyes - there is a black background, I'm using a monitor with a fairly wide dynamic range and it is rather bright and hard on my eyes.

Self hosted wordpress has a section called dashboard or the admin area. I didn't perhaps make myself clear because it's different depending on wordpress version. Anyway the site looks ok, and seems to run quite quickly.

On a side note, an plugin you must use is W3 Total Cache. Massive speed up for your wordpress install, can minify js,css etc. Any other plugin queries then give me a shout...
