old cars and new cars

So you think the current model 6 Series is not a new car?

I guess I do, yes. As I said, I've never really given it much thought though, guess there is no real year limit you can put on such classification.

If its my every day car modern is best.

Cars for weekends and fair weather fun modern or old.

How strange you think its possible to walk into a main dealer and hand over 60k for an 'old' car with a 60 plate on. I suppose you think the Mercedes-Benz SL500 is an old car as well?

I love my older cars, I drive an '85 Audi ur quattro Coupe Turbo and it keeps you on your toes! You actually have to put some effort into driving such cars and getting from A - B just puts a huge smile on your face cause it feels like you drove it and you got it there, in a new car you just don't feel like that, they just aren't 'involving'.
Plus, older cars just look cooler than your average new car :D

When some old geezer reversed into the back of the quattro I was given this merc as a hire car untill it was repaired...... as nice as it was to sit in, it was just the most uninvolved week and a half of driving ever! I couldn't wait to get back on the quattro!

Although the quattro is 25 years old, it's actually quite new compared to what I drove before it :D

Sooooo... yea, I favour the older cars!

I'd love an old car - but only as a second car. For me getting to and from work safely, in comfort with all my toys is brilliant. I'd hate to do it in an old classic car. The same way i wouldn't really take my car across Europe or a driving holiday or something but would love to do this in a classic.

I guarantee there are various trim noises that were not there 20 years ago.

You do realise that I'm going to have to go for a drive and listen intently now don't you?!

But I really don't think there are, I recently replaced the dashboard, ensuring any worn fixing were replaced. Admittedly I am missing some fixing on some of the front exterior trim, but that's all coming off painting anyway, so will be fitted back as good as new.

I am sure there is no real noise but I'll get back to you with a full report.

Whether a car is new or not I guess depends on the context.

My car is 8 years old so is quite obviously not a new car. However in the context of this thread I don't see how it can be anything but in the 'new' category - it has all of the attributes of a 'new' car that people who like 'old' cars dislike - ie Dynamic Stability Control, ABS, Xenons, blah blah.

I think what really we mean here is 'modern cars' rather than 'new cars'.

My current 20 year old car does me fine I love everything about it, has all the toys but I need a 4 door car now.

Only modern cars I like are out of my price range, unless I get a base model prefacelift e60 which is not really what I want so the hunt for a nice e38 or e39 in the right spec continues.

If you have to drive from A to B every day for work then a new car wins every time. However, driving for the sake of driving, generally old cars are better, unless you can afford some of the more serious new stuff.

My thoughts exactly.

If you commute, you want something as quiet, economical and easy to drive as possible. It must be exceptionally safe and reliable.

A weekend toy needn't have any of see attributes, really...

Excatly. I wouldn't really count myself as in either camp really. I've got my Clio 182 for day to day use as I like cruise control, climate control reliability blah blah blah. The Camaro is good for a laugh though. Much as the 182 is obviously a fun drive, IMHO you can't easily modify modern cars to the same extent you can older ones.

I prefer old cars but my idea of old is quite different to what people consider old on here.

Mine are 1967 and 1927 respectively, though the 1927 car has late 40's running gear. My other two cars have been from 1961 and 1954.

I just feel claustrophobic, closed in, disconnected and out of control in modern cars. I don't like the big reactions you get when you touch controls like the steering and brakes, I don't like all the distractions, I don't like having umpteen different things on the stalks, ambiguous electric window controls. The list goes on and on.

I prefer "older" cars. Late 80s/early/mid 90s is what I consider to be the golden age of the car.

I struggle to think of many modern cars that I'd have over a mint example of the 90s equivalent model :).

I prefer older cars too, or if it has to be relatively modern ones that reflect their heritage.

It's not hard to find cars from the 70s and 80s (sometimes even the 50s/60s) that's had cruise, air con and power windows or seats so sometimes the lack of 'toys' isn't an issue - and even mine from the late 60s had illuminated gloveboxes unlike those damned modern Audis :p

The only common thing that tends to show up in an older car is wind or road noise but it does vary from model to model and sometimes it's easily rectified.

Likewise I've used cars from the 70s as daily commuters - and they've been easy to drive, economical and comfortable - and sometimes much more so than certain other modern cars...

My old 1850HL made barely a squeak or a rattle on the road, much like my E30, which was dead (seriously so) silent - so it can be done.

Just depends on the car, as always - although the reliability issue can rise it's head, it really, again, depends on the car and who's buying or maintaining it......

Random mind dump really this post, long old two days, but just some observations.

cant be doing with older cars

No idea why, some weird obsession of mine. Dont care about the numberplate, its not a status thing. its a paranoid fear of things falling apart and a like of shiny new looking things.

Much prefer modern LED backlight instrument clusters, even better if they are like the MY2011 mustang and have the option to change the colour of the backlight ! That sort of stuff interests me more than a car with "character"

For me it's largely an issue of safety.

I've never ever considered safety when looking at potential new cars. :o

You can change the blacklights on most cars by just changing the bulbs!

I know what you mean - but as a counterpoint in some cases that's what gives older cars their character - because they have equipment or features like that, ahead of their time, or things implemented in ways you don't see any more, or wouldn't have thought of.

You can find older cars with technology like that you mention as well - many American and German cars of the late 70s and 80s came with audio alerts, adjustable dashboards, numerous trip computer features and abilities and various readouts and displays that you wouldn't have thought existed....

Contrary to popular belief character is not random bits of trim rattling, or intermittently failing electrics - it's things like the beautiful engineering and detailing that goes into a Rover P5, the modern car-like ride of a straight-six engined Triumph saloon, the grin on your face from the shunt given from even a mild 350ci smallblock V8, these are aspects that make the cars what they are.
