Hi,

I appreciate there are a lot of students on here so was wondering if you could help me out. I'm with HSBC and went over my overdraft limit and have been charged £25.

I don't really have a problem with this, unlike most of the petulant whining idiots who complain about bank charges I'll accept that I shouldn't have gone over my limit and thus it's perfectly fair for them to issue a fine, albeit one which is fairly steep given the amount I exceeded the overdraft by! However I'd be a fool to just pay it if there's an easy way to get off it which is why I'm asking. Has anyone been in my position and been able to get away with it?

If you're a student why don't you have an overdraft? I suggest you ask them for an overdraft and if they say no then switch banks as most student accounts will give you an overdraft of £500-£2000 depending how long you've been with them. My halifax account is £1000 and I got it only 3 months after opening it, intially it was £300.

Or even just call them up, say it was a mistake and you're sorry, they should refund you as its your first time.
 
HSBC usually give a huge overdraft, how the hell did you go over it? Everyone by me who went with HSBC had £750-£1000 overdraft!

But yeah, give them a ring or go to the local branch should suffice.

If you dont really have a problem with it, then pay up. You clearly do have a problem or you would'nt be asking how to avoid paying.

Why are people who complain about bank charges petulant idiots? I think most peoples problem with bank charges is not the fact they have been charged for going over their limit however the unfair amount they are charged compared to the often small amount they exceed their limit by.

Ring them, plead ignorance, explain situation (in education) and tel them you'll monitor closely from now on.

My best friend works for a bank, he told me the other day most banks opperate under the following code:

If it's your first time offence and you complain/enquire they will almost always reverse the charge, if it is a common thing they will not even consider it unless it is a mistake by them.

I've never had one, but if I ever did get one I'd be into my bank (also HSBC) and just politely asking for the money back with some random excuse.
 
First offences of this nature are usually written off upon request. Either that or speak to your bank manager and they should be able to sort you out.

£25 is bloody steep though. Barclays try to hit me with £8 if I ever do that (but I just phone my bank manager and he writes it off for me, no questions asked). Seeing as they also allow students to bump up their OD by £500 per term (up to £3,000 I think) that soon stops being a problem after your first year. :)
 
I also have a student bank account with HSBC and got charged for going over the OD limit (first and only time). When I went in to the branch they pointed at their fair fees policy and said tough, basically.
 
In related news, my brother was with HSBC at uni. He hit his overdraft hard, and was constantly over the limit. For a time they cancelled his cards and he had to go in branch in person to request a withdrawal.
 
To be honest I think I'm screwed I've been going over and under the limit all summer.

It's tough when you're a student with no money and you have an unpaid internship for the summer and an hour motorway commute each way every day, not that they will care.
 
Forgot about this thread. Needless to say writing the posh letter worked and they gave me the money back. Just goes to show a bit of perseverance is worth it!
