What i want to know is, can i save the blueray contents to my PS3 Harddrive and then play back without the blueray disk in the PS3?

didnt know if this was better here or in the console section.

As far as I am aware, the PS3 doesn't natively support DVD VOB playback (as a file outside of the DVD), so I would expect it won't playback the BR equivalent. I am also pretty sure that ripping a BR is still a bit tricky and you certainly couldn't do it with a PS3, you'd need a PC and a stand-alone drive.

Saying that, if you were to setup something like PS3 Media Server on a PC and connect to it via your PS3, then it can transcode DVD VOBs on the fly to a format that the PS3 can render, so it may be able to do the same with Bluerays. Ultimately though, no I don't think it can do what you want specifically (nor should it be able to legally, the content on your blueray disc is licensed to stay on that media only in most cases)

^ LOL, my supervisor is right, I do type too much :p

Damn :(

I was round my gf's house last night, and she was on her dads PS3 in the living room, flicking through loads of films on his PS3.

Is that only possible by setting up the PS3 as a media centre from your pc and syncing the movies from your pc to PS3?

PS3 will play VOBs natively.

It's possible to do, but I'm fairly sure it's not for discussion on this forum.

Really? Mine wouldn't play ball when I threw one at it, (stuck it on its hard drive) and PS3 media server automatically transcodes them for me?

Either way, I'm pretty sure you can't do the BR equivalent.

EDIT: What you saw was the contents of somebodies DLNA media server collection. Perfectly legal in itself.

Windows media player has one built in, so all your (legal) movies you have stored in its library can be shared to another device that can connect to such a service, such as the PS3, as long as its DRM license allows it of course. Same goes for music.

There are also third party DLNA servers, such as PS3 media server or TVersity. Again all totally legal and above board in itself. the DLNA streaming standard is what makes it possible to use media streamers, which is all the PS3 is doing. I believe OCuk actually sell some of these devices :)

Yes but the PS3 is a bit picky about external drive file systems and the like. Network streaming is by far the easiest option, but if you wanna plug in a HD, have a read on the internet for hos to format it all correctly before you start
