Hi all

Long time shopper, first time poster :) Sorry if this has already been asked, I did find quite a few posts on this topic but none seemed to answer my question.

I'm currently running a pair of Saphire 5770s in Crossfire and I'm looking to upgrade my gfx cards. Along with everything else.

My question is this; is it worth buying a pair of cheaper GTX460s in SLi or a single GTX480?

I hope that makes sense and I'd appreciate any input.

Tony

768mb GTX460's? Or 1GB?
Not that it makes much difference!

With the 460's being a hell of a lot cheaper than a single 480, IMO would go 460 SLi.

But if you can stretch to the GTX480, then do that.
Always better to go for single over double, as it allows room for a secondary card in the future for extra performance!

I wouldn't say theres a massive price difference.
At the moment the MSI and ASUS cards are coming out on top as they seem to be quieter than other brands.
So if you compare the MSI Cards:

MSI GeForce GTX 480 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with MAFIA 2: £352.49
2x MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card: £352.48

you save a penny by going SLi and you will have to replace both the cards if you want to upgrade again. If you have the £££ go for the GTX480 and get another later on.

I have seen 480's selling for £335 with mafia 2.

My advice would be to go for a 480 over SLI 460's. If you ever have SLI issues you will be knocked down to one 460. Plus you have a nice upgrade path with a 480. With SLI 460's you are maxed out as these cards dont allow tri SLI.

I'm running 2 Palit Sonic Platinums and they are rockin.... 50-60 fps in Crysis maxxed at 1080p with AA

SLI issues thankfully are few and far between, (although they do exist.) and BF BC2 on my 120hz monitor is a joy to behold. (When I'm not running 3d.)

To me it only really (in most circumstances) makes sense to go SLI if you already have a card. Probably the way I shall go at some point, but I already have a 460. Otherwise I tend to agree with the main sentiment here.
IE. one BIG mother of a card if you can afford it.

I don't think I'm ever going to be able to justify two 480s :)

But I've got a potential buyer for one of my 5770s, then the other can go on ebay and then I shall go shopping :)

MSI or Asus for the 480?

Actuall, looking at that site - the 460s in SLI beats the 480 in most things.. Though last time I looked there were quite a few games that the 480 was beating the 460s on.

I wonder if the have not updated their 480 test with the newer drivers - they made a massive improvement over the release drivers.

Your sig's against the rules, 4 lines of text maximum, you should change in case a mod sees and swings the banhammer in your direction.
