Unless I have it wrong, I understood it to be that he was sentenced to 12 years which means he will have to serve at least 8 before being considered for parole.
That's still a hell of a long time to think about what he's done; especially given, as you said, the treatment he's likely to face inside. As someone said above though, it's rather paradoxical. Nobody can deny the appalling severity of his actions, but murders can get less than that. :\
Then again, with Virginia about to execute a woman with an IQ of just 72, perhaps its all a matter of perspective. But that's another thread.
