Hi guys
Just got my MSi hawk today and first impressions are good, on idle it's silent :)

Just ran up battlefield and i heard the fans (not as much as on the gainward though) so remembering what a few people had said i installed afterburner and set up a profile for the fans. I think i have done this correctly and i think it's saved. This is probably a stupid question but i'm guessing u must have afterburner set to start with windows for the profile to take effect?

Ok just going to test profile out on BBC2.

Don't have a multi-meter do you?

Just a warning if you want to OC this card, that you can't user software to read the voltages (IE. tools like Nvidia Inspector, GPU-z, or come to that, the monitor in AfterBurner).
Though they do appear to show a value, it is not correct and does not change if you modify the voltages via a utility like AfterBurner.

To quote an MSI source:
"uP6262 voltage regulators used to control voltage on 460 HAWK series doesn't support voltage feedback and software monitoring".

Being pedantic it actually uses two different ones (IE. uP6225 & uP6262).

And yes, I am aware that you can use software voltage monitoring on the MSI Cyclone. I'm assuming it uses different ones.

Not like you really need to know what the voltages actually are to OC via a tool like AfterBurner. Just nice to know though IMO.

After a weeked of using the GTX 460 Hawk i can confirm i'm very happy with it.

It runs every game i have at max settings and it's whisper quiet.

I'm not sure i'll be doing much overclocking though Mikeo, the main reason i went for the hawk over the cyclone was it had a better and bigger overclock meaning i don't have to tinker with it. Plus if it's playing every game i have at the moment then there's really no need..................for now.

I'm a bit lazy sometimes, i bought a core i7 920 intending to overclock and just never got round to it ;)

Hi,

Just bought the Titan Exodus system off overclockers and got this graphics card as part of the setup. Unfortunately after half a day, windows device manager reported that it has "stopped this device because it has reported problems Error code 43".

Computer worked ok for the first half a day connected to my LG 42" HDTV via DVI to HDMI, The next day though the graphics card stopped working.
The computer boots up using onboard vga graphics. I've tried roll backing the drivers and reinstalling the ones from the MSI website, as well as later ones from Nvidia. They install fine, but the card still doesn't work.

I've sent the card back to overclockers under RMA to replace, but i'm wondering if anyone else has had a failure like this, could it be cause at all by connecting to an HD tv rather than a traditional monitor?

It's definitely worth trying to overclock, IMO. These cards scale really well with overclocks, especially on the core, it seems. Plus it's like free extra performance!

I'm going to push mine to 900 core over the next week or two for sure. Though, sadly, it seems my graphics memory gives up the ghost if I push past 4150. Still, 900/4150 is a great improvement over 780/3600. Should give a 10-12% performance boost, and not too hard to achieve (though mine did need a couple of voltage nudges to get to 875 - still cool and quiet though).

I can't hear the reference cooler at all at idle and at load... well I have a Sharkoon 2000RPM set to spin up under load to keep my overclocked Q6600 cool so I can't hear anything over that anyway :)

Oh, and to AM - yes, the web is chock full of forum complaints of various 460s suddenly developing faults that stop Windows booting with it. Some people seem to think it might be a PSU issue (and it not liking split 12V lines with low per-line amps), some argue that it's drivers, others seem to suggest it's down to motherboard/GPU incompatibility. I was quite worried because I first started seeing these reports while I was waiting for my 460 to arrive. Just Google GTX460 and "freeze" "lock-up" "start-up" and so on. Not sure what to suggest. Perhaps discussing with OcUK and mentioning that it seems to be a known issue with some GTX460s?

Been there, done that. I have a faulty (but working !) GTX460. The experiences that I`ve had with my first Nvidia card in many years have not been good. And describing my problem to the people I purchased my motherboard/graphics card from doesn't fill me with confidence. Because the fault is so wierd (my current card only works in one of the two motherboards that I own, the first card I got worked in the motherboard that the exchaged card now refuses to boot with), sending it back to Ocuk will probably result in "fault not found - please pay £xx inspection fee". There does seem to be a widespread problem with some GTX cards, but manufacturers and Nvidia are keeping very quiet on the subject.

Great cards if you get a reliable one though. I'm going to RMA mine once the issue has been sorted (if ever it gets sorted). The whole saga of buying a GTX460 has cost me a lot of time and a fair bit of postage cost. And I`m not the only one.

Yeah, I've seen some people saying they've had successful RMA's others saying they haven't. Seems a bit pot luck. Kinda sucks when there are so many reports around that retailers and manufacturers can still take the plausible deniability line and refuse RMAs.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that my 460 is a good one (not seen any reports yet of a PNY 460 failing) as I'm liking it a lot.
 
It wouldn't have been so bad if the GTX460 hadn't worked in any PC, but because it locked up under load with my motherboard, but worked perfectly in 2 other machines and a new replacement motherboard in my PC, I wasted 3 weeks by sending my motherboard for testing. It came back to me "no fault found". I then had to send the mb back with the new GTX460. The GTX460 was found to be faulty with my mb, so they sent a replacement card. The replacement card refuses to even boot up with the newer mb that I was using, but does work (albeit at x8 in the x16 pcie slot on my original mb, I posted about this earlier today). Apart from that, the card works fine now, but I know that if I change my motherboard, it will be a lottery. Someone without as much time to spend swapping components and testing would have given up by now. I`m not the only one to have these kind of problems, but I haven't heard if there is going to be a fix for these problems. My worst ever upgrade experience, made worse by not knowing what Nvidia or the manufacturers are doing about it.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, doesn't fill me with confidence, although with the whole pc was bought from overclockers, so they should be able to test on the same setup.

Re Dervious, seems strange that it only locks up for some cards on some motherboards even when the same brand of card and motherboard are the same.

It is strange, but I speak the truth !

There's some very funny behaviour by some GTX cards. The two cards I`ve owned have been really fussy as to which motherboard they'll work with.

I would have thought that Nvidia might be in a good position to do so, or at least say they are trying to, but all we get is "_____".

It doesn't make me feel like I`m going to stick with Nvidia (being a recent convert from ATI). All they seem to be worried about is loss of prospective sales, rather than looking after those of us who have already given them our money.

Have now had the report from the RMA testing from OCUK and the card works fine apparently. Have now agreed with them that if it still doesn't work when it's returned to me, they will test the whole system, since it was all bought from them.

Could it be due at all, to hooking up the PC to an HDTV only (ie i have no other monitor)? There were a couple of occasions, before windows stopped the card completely, when a message appeared in the system tray and would report something like "Kernel has failed and has now restarted". I presume that the message was related to the graphics card.

The tv is a pretty recent LG 42LD790, and was connected via DVI to HDMI cable and displayed at native resolution (1080p).
