Musicians who deserve the title Genius?

Jay-z

Also Kid Cudi- if you've listened to his mixtape and his album, you'l realise why he's so popular despite being so new- genius of the future...

Also I agree with the person below- eminem-

Mozart
Beethoven
Chopin
Robert Johnson
Chuck Berry
Eminem
Hendrix
John Williams
Mikael Akerfeldt
Noel Gallagher
The Beatles
Manic Street Preachers

I'm with Bill Bailey on The Edge. Far too reliant on effects, albeit some talent.
Satriani and Vai - not musically genius. I have far too many of their albums, and most of it is technical b****** with, imho, very little originality/compositional/asthetic consideration. Especially of late, it's all throwaway.

I'm not really understanding why Brian Transeau aka BT is also popular or regarded as somewhat of a genius either, also could someone explain Trent Reznor to me? The most genius thing he has done as far as I can see is made himself a millionairre off Ghosts, the worst NIN record ever. Beyond that, it's all really simple industrial with pessimistic lyrics - genius, really? I suspect Phil Collins is more of a musical genius really, and I'd rather listen to How To Destroy Angels.

his failure as a solo artist kinda ruins that for me

He is a very talented song writer, but not quite there for me.

It's annoying how many people consider a blip in someone's musical career equates lack of musical genius. IMO the best music is full of 'mistakes', where strict musical rules are broken and humanity pushes through!

Oh yeah? Name me a really successful, memorable song from his solo career.

As far as I'm aware he helped writing a few.. But yeh you got a point now I look back on the question.

Umm, don't know then :p
The people who started blowing and hitting things to make sounds for entertainment ;)

I was going to put Thom Yorke before I read the thread in it's entirety. He's pretty much there in my book, hell even looks like some sort of de-ranged genius most of the time...

Admittedly it's more of a group effort when it comes to him, but he's there or thereabouts i'd wager.

So...another one for Trent. The guy made my Uni time pass much more quickly all those years ago :)

cbf? So that means you don't know?

Okay, so off the top of my head I remember that crappy Open Road song he did on piano, which I think was also the album title aswell. I remember it on TOTP, was appalling. So point taken I guess - although I did sadly remember.

Gary Barlow is not a genius and I'm not defending the guy I hasten to add, he's a tit. I was talking in general terms.
