Hi, is there a difference between putting your DVDs/ Blu Ray in a Bookcase vs a DVD shelving unit? What is the difference?

Height of shelves most likely.
Bookcase will work, although you may have wasted space above the DVDs, where as a DVD unit is made to fit without wasted space. but it all depends on the Bookcases shelf size.

If you put them on a bookcase, they slowly lose their data, at a rate of 10% data per year.

Aside from the fact that a DVD shelving unit will be designed to be the right height to accept DVDs and a bookshelf might not be? I'd go with that as the primary difference. Sorry but it's one of those questions that just invites a silly answer.

Obviously it'll vary but bookshelves tend to have a little bit more distance between the shelves because books aren't a standard size, unlike DVDs which are pretty much standardised with only the occasional company bucking the trend and even then they usually just vary the width.

Re book cases, some have adjustable shelving which can make them a lot cheaper as a way to store DVD's than dedicated storage.
I believe Billy style bookcases from Ikea are often recommended for DVD storage as they are cheap, are available in different finishes, have adjustable shelves (and the option to buy more), and have optional doors of different types.
IIRC many book cases are also deep enough to hold two rows of DVD's/Blu-rays/CD's, which is handy if you've got a lot and are able to store them in some semblance of order :)

For highest density + ease of access though you want some form of drawer unit, but they tend to be either very hard to find suitable units, or expensive :) (I made some which are about the size of a single floor standing kitchen cupboard with full extension runners, able to hold about 220 DVD's with ease, including slightly oversized ones).

DVD storage have holes specificly shaped for DVDs

bookcases quite often have different size shelves to accomodate different sized books and some may not fit DVDs, some may be too big

Get an adjustable bookcase and theres no difference at all.

@ Werewolf, thankyou for recommending me the Billy from Ikea i will have a look at that, and i also i will look at adjustable shelving in bookcases.

I would imagine a bookcase to be built to carry heavy loads such as encyclopedias (remember them??) volumes of law books, that kind of thing.
Whereas a DVD storage unit will just be el cheapo laminated MDF and woodglue made from leftover bechamel sauce.

That's a point - why isn't there any shelving units with Blu-Ray sized shelves yet?

You have any idea how long it took them to make specific DVD, or CD sized ones :)

IIRC most of the ones that are adjustable (IE intended for a mix of CD's and DVD's) will be suitably adjustable for Blu-rays as they are about half an inch lower than DVD's :)
