How is it a downgrade ? And yes they do give more performance, they also have better sound output.
I am thinking these are the replacement for the 8800GT's which were so popular as they were awesome bank for buck.
The only thing it limits is upgradability but who wants 2 x 480's as they consume too much power.
Yes the '8800 Effect', I think you just fell for some Nvidia/Fudzilla marketing unfortunately.
Bottom line is your old 480 will be smoother even if it doesn't have quite as high FPS, due to a phenomenon called micro-stutter that neither Nvidia or AMD seem to want to acknowledge it.
Oh perhaps you should do a search about the popular 8800's micro-stutter.
I think it's better option to go single GPU and only upgrade when a faster single GPU is available instead of getting another for SLI later.
