GTX 460 sli or Single GTX480

Yes the '8800 Effect', I think you just fell for some Nvidia/Fudzilla marketing unfortunately.
Bottom line is your old 480 will be smoother even if it doesn't have quite as high FPS, due to a phenomenon called micro-stutter that neither Nvidia or AMD seem to want to acknowledge it.

Oh perhaps you should do a search about the popular 8800's micro-stutter.

I think it's better option to go single GPU and only upgrade when a faster single GPU is available instead of getting another for SLI later.
 
I own 2x460's and think I should have gone for the a single 480 instead. The performance of 460 SLI is great within bot benchmarks and all of the games I play. However, both of my ASUS 460's sit too close together and this generates far too much heat for the top card. During gaming the bottom card runs at 60deg whilst the top hits 80deg. This also pushes fan noise up on an otherwise very quiet card.

This is with the ASUS DirectCU coolers which are better than stock 460's.
 
if you have £330 and are willing to spend it on a gpu setup then always its will be better to buy the best you can- in this case a gtx 480. Sli is great for folk who don't have the cash to splash in one go. Personally I wouldn't buy 2 gtx 460's in one go when I could just get a gtx 480 which as others have said will give a less-hassle/smoother experience.

The 8800GT was awesome end of story. (I did the 8800GT SLI to GTX260 SLI upgrade route so I had a good chance to compare the 8800GT SLI setup against a single 200 series card of comparable performance).

"micro-stutter" is so hysterically blown out of proportion its almost amusing.

i jst sent back 2 gtx460 and bought myself 2 gtx480 as i wanted a bit more power,so i say get 1 gtx480 now then go sli later on

As a single GPU it was. The 460 is hardly the second coming of the 8800, unless of course you listen to Fudzilla and Nv Pr.

Maybe it is, but it's real and does have an impact, it's about time reviewers took this into account as well, then we wouldn't be hearing about poor soles selling up their GTX 480 for a 460SLI setup to gain a few 'extra' FPS in a benchmark, but actually gain less real world performance.
 
For the 460 to be second coming of the 8800 it would need to be similiar performance to the 470 while in the 460 price ball park.
 
Micro stutter? never experienced it on my current sli setup, its that smooth its boringly reliable in the games that use it. BFBC2 is a great example, its the main game i play, it runs as smooth as silk, 1920x1200. Though i might still go for a single 470 and add a second later.
 
It's funny... this time last month everyone was recommending 460 sli. Now that everyone has 460 sli, we recommend the 480. :D

But yes I recommend the 480.
 
Ive had a gtx480 although it was a good card i just fancy sli again like my 8800gt's (which i never noticed any micro stutter with) ;) besides the 460's are faster cooler and consume less power.
 
480 = no driver/sli issues

460 = cooler, quieter, a little faster.

I went with the 460s - very happy with performance, haven't seen any bugs yet, nividias drivers are great. If I had the choice again I'd not get gainward/palit, I'd go with 2 gigabyte gtx460s. Better built.
