Hi,

Gibabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H

Or

Asrock K10N78

Best mobo for this processor, im sure they both support the 125w version of the 965, and the DD2 support is the same but Graphics are different so which do you feel is the best?

Well the Asrock is a NVIDIA® GeForce 8200 Chipset board, while the gigabyte uses the much newer (and better) AMD 785G chipset. So definitely the gigabyte is the one to go for.

However, as Doughnut007 says - are you just limited to these boards?

Also, will you be needing the onboard graphics?

Thanks for your reply guys.

I have an 8600GT that i will use so onboard does not matter too much. The problem is that there are so many AM2 boards but not all allow the 965 to be used as a backwards compatible processor i know these 2 do and they are around £50 which is my price budget.

I have not managed to find any good sites where you can choose a processor then it gives you all the compatible boards.

Any other suggestions are appreciated, i am purchasing the CPU from OC.

For your uses and budget I think the Gigabyte 785G DDR2 board is ideal. So long as you can get it for your budget - I say go for it.

If you can stretch the budget a bit, this board is a solid performer and is full ATX so you have more connectivity options. It also fully supports the Phenom II 965BE.

Why do you want to stick with DDR2 ram?
Is it just cost? If you can stretch to it you would be much better off going for a DDR3 board and new ram. You could get a cheaper processor to save some cash.

There is the other option of buying a MB that takes DDR2 and 3 I know there is a few but cant find one on OCUK. I saw it yesterday though.

If he has a stash of DDR2 then it makes perfect sense to buy an AM2+ board . . . if he doesn't then I agree may as well go DDR3 . . .

DDR2 Ram is only becoming more valuable and DDR3 ram is becoming less valuable . . .

If you can stretch to it you would be much better off going for a DDR3 board and new ram.
Why?

AM3/AM3/DDR3 is not really any better than AM3/AM2+/DDR2? . . . again if he has good DDR2 already why not go for a £58 AM2+ mobo?

Try but i was thinking along the lines of scope for future upgrade if he goes for a AM3 MB then it will more than likely be DDr3 then in the future he can upgrade his CPU without having to upgrade the board and ram at the same time.

This is of course just my opinion

TBH a well supported AM2+ board like the gigabyte or ASUS mentioned above is just as likely to support future CPUs as an AM3 board. Both of these boards can run a Phenom II X6 with a current BIOS.

Considering the next generation AMD Bulldozer CPUs will use the new AM3+ socket and not be compatible with current AM3 (or AM2+) boards, then AM3 and AM2+ have similar upgrade opportunities.
