Karl Pilkington - An Idiot Abroad

ANOTHER GENIUS PRODUCTION! Just watched this and I think I need someone to pop another lung on me. I can barely breath. Can you believe there's people saying Gervais' stuff has been crap after The Office. In yo face.

"The chinese just make everything weird... I mean their alphabet is just like someone testing out a biro"

"I don't think I've ever felt this lost... not even in Wales"

*Looks at a goldfish bowl in the hotel room* "That's a nice touch... hold on... that is just for looks right... I mean it's not some kind of appetizer is it?"

"It's not Karrrr it's KarLLLL"

"He's got a Sainsburys bag of Toads, that... I dunno what that is... I mean it looks like a bunch of condoms in Jam n' water or sumin... I mean he's got it all laid out like it's supposed to tempt you in"

*finishes a packet of Monster Munch* "Thing is, I'm the freak here aren't I.... eating this"

Since my daughter was the only one who picked up ojn the script error here it is -

In the Preview show they were sitting on the chairs when Pilkington got phased by the camera crew and Gervais/Merchant announced he would have to get used to them because they were all going with him.
In the first episode they did exactly the same sketch but sitting in the office and once again it was as though it was the first time he heard it.

trentlad, you wrote the post above as though you now believe that Gervais had wrote those lines - are you coming round to my way of thinking?
I also wouldn't be surprised if Gervais and Merchant were actually there during shooting.

3.50 - Looks a lot like they're in the office to me?

Can't find it on youtube yet, but I've watched it. It's exactly the same clip.

She must have had a bad view from the kitchen, since it's the same clip :p

Come on now. Are you serious!

I just come here to specifically ask you if you still think Karl is still following/recollecting a planned script of funny things to say. To be greeted with irrefutable proof that you're seeing what you want to see. Hehe! :p

When I said the above about giving credit to Gervais; I was just ranting towards the those who think Gervais hasn't created anything decent since the office. Not to say this is a scripted show, but he knows Karl well enough from the TRUE STORIES that he's discussed (on the show alone) to understand how he would respond to seeing new cultures.

You can't tell me after this show you still think he's not that ignorant in real life.

He is a character who is getting better and better.
The clue should be that he actually lets all this stuff go out for broadcast where any normal idiot would give you a punch for taking the pee.
Or perhaps he is such an idiot that he doesn't realise what's going on.
The clue should also be in his punchlines which idiots would be able to do.
He is a very clever man and I also think that Gervais/Merchant have wrote some of the material.

I thought it was brilliant! I was worried it wouldn't live up to expectations but it's even better than I hoped. I'm enjoying Karl more on his own than when he's with Ricky and Steve. The bit where he was eating the toad and getting the 'massage' had me in stitches :D

He doesn't want to do any more podcasts or go on TV. He's said that on a ton of interviews but Gervais keeps nagging him and he ends up doing it cos of the cash for zero effort.

He doesn't want to do it and then he does - c'mon, think about it.

Any normal person would not allow somebody to name a programme 'An Idiot Abroad' or 'Satisfied Fool'.
If he was not the Karl character he would defend his views and say he is not a fool or idiot and stop the broadcasts.
Or perhaps he is such an idiot that he doesn't even know these programmes have been on.
Some of us get the character and the rest will get it eventually.
He's too sharp, quick and witty to be a fool.

I'd usually agree but with only an E in History and the XFM Days, I'm not so sure.

You have to remember that intellect and common sense are completely separate entities.

In all fairness, think about the effort he applies and the wealth he rakes in from it. Not a bad life really.

Or how about just from watching this show alone. He doesn't even have Gervais around to 'direct' him.

Steven Merchant is just another of Ricky's characters, he is actually called Alan Jefferson and is a joiner by day... the genius of scripting!
