Or maybe you are just no good at Maths

I think I have numerical dyslexia, never been tested but I suck so badly with numbers that I must have it.
My daughter has dyslexia and she is really taking strain at school with learning to read and write. But we are lucky the school she goes to has a pretty good Dyslexia unit. The upside is that she is bloody amazing with three dimensional maths. So any form of trinomial or polynomial equations she is able to see the answers but not have a clue how she got there. Pretty confusing for a 7 year old.![]()
When i got to high school they decided i have dyslexia as i was either in the top 3 or bottom 3 in every subject (well mediocrity is a sin). Got sent for proper tests then got sent to extra lessons; which were condescending at best degrading at worst.
Could it not just be that the subjects I did poorly in i dislikedSeems now like the school were just after an excuse rather then do the difficult thing and sort things out.
I have not watched the film yet - but it might be a good idea for my daughter to see it. I think that at times she feels pretty isolated from her class because of the way she struggles with the words.
But the good thing is that no one would dare bully her - she is not the shy and retiring type. Comes from having a couple of really rough and tumble boy buddies that she plays with all the time. Plus she is very very tall for her age. Think she is the tallest in her class at the moment.
I agree that far to many schools do take the easy option and say oh that child or this child has some special needs. But what really is needed is better bloody teaching. And more specifically teaching that meets the needs of the students. Not all kids are the same, or have the same interests. So I think it is bloody stupid to force all kids to learn the same way.
Rant over.
Thanks for the thread mate.
Will do mate - off to the football now.Ah the joy of watching your team get hammered week in and week out. Oh well that is what being a fan is all about.
Cheers.

I agree that a lot of people use being dyslexic as more of an excuse than anything else, but since i was very young i've been told i am dyslexic. I write B instead of D and i relate to the probably and properly issue, i even use the word proberly thinking it was correct. I often get confused with what i'm even talking about, ie Its up my cup of tea!
Though i don't think i would watch this film because it isolates people with dyslexia when it really isn't a big deal.
Yes that is it exactly. Not knowing you are alone. My daughter felt she was a retard at first because her younger sister could read and she could not, that all the kids in her class could read but she could not. And suddenly when she found out that she just learnt in a different way, the relief was quite intense emotionally for her. Suddenly she was more willing to engage in class and participate fully.
And from a parents point of view I just did not know what to do. She tried really hard all the time and would cry asking why she was so stupid. Now what do you answer to that? I had no idea what the flug was going on. I could see she was not holding back when she tried. So now we know. We are moving along using different techniques and there is progress. Good progress too. But the big thing was her realising that she was not alone. Not a freak as she thought and expressed how she thought herself to be.
