Buy an ipad now or wait?

As per the title really. Is it still worth buying the ipad or is a new version due for release soon? Do Apple always refresh their models every 12 months?

if it follows the iPhone refresh timings, something next year is probably due. However, I'm at a loss as to what they'd actually put in it to improve it.
Buying any technology product boils down to how much you want/need it at the time - if you wait around because the next upgrade is around the corner, you'd never buy anything!

I bought the 32gb 3G version yesterday, very happy with it :D

The iPad is such an unnecessary item (ie you probably don't really need it critically in your life) so you may as well wait until they refresh it, as a new one will clearly be better. If you buy one now, you will no doubt kick yourself when the better one comes out.

Unless of course you can afford to buy one now, sell it and pay a bit more for the new one.

Personally, I'd wait.

I do wonder how much different the 2nd Gen iPad will be.

How cost prohibitive would adding a Retina display be? I think it must almost be a given that there will be a front facing camera for Facetime but will there be a rear facing camera for photography and HD video shooting? The iPad is a little too big for that surely?

I can't see me getting a 2nd Gen. I stick with my orginal for a few Gen's yet I expect. Unless something I can't imagine is added.

The killer app for me will be FaceTime. Love it on the iPhone 4, would be great on the 'pad.

The 'should I wait' question is an eternal one you could apply to any tech though couldn't you? I don't know the answer to it.

Personally I buy stuff when I can - however I don't often fund them myself so it's probably not a valid question. I doubt I'd have an iPad if I had to actually buy it.

I haven't seen anyone say there is a chance of a retina display... as everyone knows that would mean multiplying the amount of pixels by 4.. and well that's a lot.

Rear camera.. I say no chance tbh.. Its way to big. Though there's rumours left right and centre about a 7" screen. Front facing camera; most likely for face time yes..

I would like to know how much people use facetime though.. now its obviously on the ipod touch and iPhone.. there's of course a few of them around but not a insane amount.

I would definintely wait, also theres a flood of new tablets coming to the market, like the galaxy tab, that have a lot more features than the ipad. ie Camera's ect. I have had 2 ipads and sold them again both times after a couple of weeks, but there's always something that makes me think i need one..... how mad is that?

Thats just it. I know I dont need one, but I had a bonus and love gadgets so suppose Im just curious too see what theyre like! Suppose im just a magpie at heart!

And its way more expensive for just a few things extra

Wait for iPad 2

It has nothing to do with need. I can't imagine any single person who has bought an iPad NEEDED one. I know I didn't but I was like you, a gadget lover with spare cash :D

But I think it's something to do with the clever Apple advertising, I just feel myself being drawn towards buying one... happened twice already, it really is a cool gadget, but then when I have it I feel guilty that I spent £600 on such a device!!

I haven't felt guilty. Yes of course there are many things I could have, nay should have, spent the money on but I have no regrets. It's a great laptop replacement for me though it'll never replace a desktop.

exopc is where it's at.
Personally I'd go for the exopc now as it's guaranteed to be much better than the next ipad. Runs Win7 home premium with a nice custom UI for touch. Plus think of the applications it will run.

Yes I agree with that, although the next one should be a lot better I think. Having a Galaxy S phone as well as an iPhone 4 I really like some of the features in Android, so the Galaxy Tab might be worth looking at. Having said that the "slickness' and speed of Apple's ios always seems to be win me over!

I wouldn't give it a thought of buying it just because of that, I like windows 7. I like it on my desktop with 2 big screens so I can multitask away. To have w7 on a 9"? device imo would be weird.
I think iOS is great for a device like this.

My mum just rang me up asking for locations of various store locations in Brighton. Found them quickly with a mix of safari and the map program and with street view it was even nicer for the detail.

Also I actually prefer street view on my iPad then I do on my desktop.

You'll be very much suprised about Windows 7 and mobile devices. Try it and see. Currently the touch experience is not as good as that of the ipad, but that is all set to change. Not to mention you have a FULL OS to play with.

Screen size of the exopc is 11.6" and res is 1366 x 768. Windows 7 looks fantastic on it, not to mention playing 720p HD.

Only downside a device like the exopc has is battery. Officially, I think they're quoting something like 4 hours, although those currently with unoptimised pre-production models are regularly getting a good 5 hours use (wifi, video, web usage). However, 5 hours is probably enough for most people and I'm sure further optimisation can be achieved. Then think about installing a minimal linux distro on there and things get very exciting.

So like half the battery of the iPad. I'm still impressed with the battery on the iPad. Don't regret buying it at all.

I just think with iOS, one click on home then another to get to ALL my music, or all my video, or youtube, or mail. Everything is just simple. Unless everything on W7 was on the desktop it would be weird... well I think it would be weird anyway :P

5 hours is not enough....

90min on the train to work
1 hour lunch
Check emails now and again (like i check phone for texts)
90min on the train back.

That's 4 hours plus the standby time and checking emails...its too close. If I so much as go somewhere to eat by myself, thats a flat battery on the way home.

Full OS on Tablet = dead battery.
