HTC Desire HD (Ace)

I'm sold on the new HTC Desire HD and was wondering

I've got a Desire at the moment and have had a Martin Fields screen protector fitted from day one, as I'm on the verge of pressing the pre-order button for the new Desire HD and there probably won't be any decent screen protectors around for a while how have folks faired with not using a screen protector on the current Desire.

I'm asking as I'm wondering if I sould hold off buying one till there are some screen protectors available.

You don't need screen protectors unless you play football with your phone (as the ball).

I suppose it's just a bit of paranoia I've been suffering with, thinking that once it's got a scratch it's too late then to do something about it.

Guess I'll just buy a sock for it or something like that.

The worst place for scratches on my friends Desire is the aluminium around the screen. Makes it look quite tatty :S

Mine was a belt and braces job - I've got a Martin Fields screen protector and a flip case, can't be too careful :D:D

You shouldn't need any screen protectors unless you're throwing this thing in your pocket along with your keys.

I've had my Hero for over a year now and I don't have a single scratch, not even a hairline scratch, on the screen. They're built to last :)

Thanks, guess I've just been over cautious, even with a screen protector and case I always make sure my Desire is in a pocket with nothing else or if it's in my back it's in the compartment with the soft ipod pocket.

Guess I'm still thinking back to the old days when my Nokia's used to get all scratched just by looking at them.

First off how 'hackable' will the desire HD be? for example can I play around with root access and tweak every little thing, or will the phone be designed to make that as difficult as possible/impossible? Also, i'm not much of a social networking person, so is it possible to disable all this facebook and stuff on the phone? The only social networking thing I use is twitter, and thats just to condense the tweets I read into 1 place, I don't actully tweet anything myself.

And finally, If I want to just use my pay as you go o2 sim, can I just buy the phone from play.com (seems to be the cheapest place) and put in my pay as you go sim and disable 3g? Basicaly I don't want to have to get a data plan and so I only want to use the internet access while I have wifi acces, but would this also disable the GPS and such if I don't pay for a data plan?

About being able to hack the phone, Android is designed to be hackable! It's open source remember :p

As for Facebook, yes, you can disable it. You don't even NEED to sync with it. You could just add a pay as you go sim, and disable the internet, but you would lose a lot of features unless you are able to constantly be connected to wifi. GPS won't be disabled, you just won't be able to use the maps etc.

I haven't used a screen protector on my HD2, and I've had it since November. Screen is still in perfect condition. Just keep it away from your keys!

Once you see a super amoled screen you will look for every phone to have one.

I dunno, my brother has the SGS and while its nice I certainly wouldn't avoid a phone that doesn't have one.

There is a LOT of speculation at XDA over the screen. Originally the specs were SLCD, then HTC pulled the video mentioning it and replaced it with one that doesn't say SLCD.

HTC already have TFT LCD 4.3" screens of course while they have only used SLCDs in 3.7" devices thus far.

One bunch of images comparing the HD to the Desire and the Z make the HD look limp visually but then other shots of just the HD on its own make the screen look great. It could be due to backlighting or it could be because the ones in one pic were not final production model and therefore dont have final parts.

The sooner review sites get production models in to test the better!

Im looking at getting this phone

(HTC Desire HD)

Im eligable for an upgrade on Vodafone on 26th October next month.

There is rumours that this will be available for free on a £35 a month contract for 24 months, however I have seen some of these third party websites who source the phones from the providers doing the phones for free on £30 a month contracts for 24 months.

If I decide to get one through a third party website, say buy the phone on Vodafone, can I still keep my current Vodafone number? will the PAK code trick work?

As you have already had a contract with Vodafone wont you be able to get it cheaper than normal due to loyalty? Or just threaten to leave if they dont drop the price a bit. I ask because im in a similar situation with Orange and was wondering if i could get a lower price on a contract on the Desire HD.

Yes, just make sure your current contract has actually expried, phone Vodafone for the PAC code, then give it to the online supplier AT THE TIME OF ORDER (this is usually vital especially with Vodafone who can be butthole with number porting).

IMO you're very unlikely to get Vodafone etc. to much cashback deals, especially if you've been on a low tariff.

Anyone any thoughts about the discrepancy with the release dates? Amazon and Play got the 11th and a couple of smaller sites (but well known like Handtec) got the 6th.

quite a few others have the 6th also but i doubt anyone really knows for sure. I'd still love to hear more about the screen though.

Had an email from mobilephonesdirect.co.uk this morning saying they are expecting to dispatch on the 6th. Not completely confirmed though.

I've changed my mind about both of these.

I'm getting a normal Desire as my upgrade and changing tariffs and banking my accident free year bonus from work (£750) and waiting till early next year before looking at top range phone and putting it towards that.

I'm curious to know what it is you do that gives out a bonus for not having an accident at work?

I can't help but think waiting a bit longer is the best course of action. The HD seems a bit too much like a refresh of last years phones? I.e. the upgrade from a HTC Magic to Desire is huge. The Desire to this? Not so much. Plus I'm quite excited to see what Tegra 2 offers in phones.
