HTC Desire HD (Ace)

did i miss something? where is the option to change the deal around like that?

Also, when i went to the site i found the contract you mention, but when i created an account the same deal went from 109 for the phone down to £85. very odd.

Late edit: i've just ordered a sim from O2 Voda and T-mobile to see what signal is like at home and at work.

There is not an option on the website but people have had success ringing T-mobile to request that they change to booster to unlimited net.
If you are lucky and tell them its an android they will put you on the 3gb cap and still allow you to have a flex booster for unlimted texts etc.

I'm due an upgrade in a months time and so I am scoping around.

I think I am still leaning towards the SGS. The HTC Desire HD looks good and there are a couple of nice features here (fast boot and htc sense) but for me the lack of super amoled screen is a major downfall.

Once you see a super amoled screen you will look for every phone to have one.

This is an intersting video from HTC, details some of the new sense features

I live the satnav flyby when your stopped at a red for example.

Nice link thanks,
I've just had a look at the video and have to say I'm now sold on the HTC Desire HD more than I was before.
I had a HD2 before loved the phone with that nice big screen but hated winmob. Now I can get a HTC with a 4.3' screen running android - guess I'll be dipping in to my paypacket on the 30th and ordering one of these :D

I'm still not sold on the Z though, it's a great looking phone but I guess I just think with the slide out keyboard there is something to go wrong, or get loose over time or even someting for my club fingers to break.

Can't wait till october now.

After watching that video I love the phone, but I hope someone can answer some of my questions before I think about buying. Basically, I currently have just a old feature phone and it's time for me to start looking at a decent smartphone but know too little about the market at the moment. First off how 'hackable' will the desire HD be? for example can I play around with root access and tweak every little thing, or will the phone be designed to make that as difficult as possible/impossible? Also, i'm not much of a social networking person, so is it possible to disable all this facebook and stuff on the phone? The only social networking thing I use is twitter, and thats just to condense the tweets I read into 1 place, I don't actully tweet anything myself.

And finally, If I want to just use my pay as you go o2 sim, can I just buy the phone from play.com (seems to be the cheapest place) and put in my pay as you go sim and disable 3g? Basicaly I don't want to have to get a data plan and so I only want to use the internet access while I have wifi acces, but would this also disable the GPS and such if I don't pay for a data plan?

Im sold as well, a big reason is I really want threaded sms, which I know you can get in loads of other cheaper phones as well, but might as well get a decent one while im at it :D

Nokia why do you not have threaded sms :(

Sold on maps alone. Probably use Google Maps on my HD2 as much as anything else, so to have turn-by-turn navigation, locally stored maps as well as all the other nifty features is a gigantic plus.

Based on the Desire/Android/HTC in general, very. Custom ROMs and tweaks will pop up on XDA within weeks and what you can do is only limited by what you want to or how skilled a programmer you are (or others are) really. Take the HD2 for instance, a WinMo phone that you can now dualboot to Android on.

If you don't login to Facebook then it'll never try and sync contacts etc with it. You should also be able to hide/remove the app.

And not sure on GPS without a data plan - ask O2?

Are you not tempted to see what Tegra 2 brings to the table first?

When is it coming?

By sold I mean I'm sold on the HD and what it offers over a Desire stock and can now recommend people that instead of a Desire whereas before the HTC video I was under the impression it was just a small update when clearly it's not and 720p video looks as good as an iPhone 4 too if the HTC promo is accurate!

No idea for HTC handsets but isn't the LG one meant to be out about a month after? Might still get the HD and then upgrade again when/if HTC release Tegra phones.

Can someone explain how the HDTV link works on this phone please? E.g. ... I video an event and want to view it on my big screen living room TV via my phone, without having to transfer to a USB stick or NAS. It's not got an HDMI, so how does the magic happen? Is this possible on other smart phones?

The video has me impressed and it's settled it for me to wait for this, instead of going for one of the current crop now. Hopefully the screen will be more than just a size upgrade though I haven't heard anything about this.

You have a 360 or PS3? I believe they support DLNA. So turn the console on, and via DLNA you can play the content on your TV.

Really good video. Love the htcsense.com stuff and the maps looks to remove the frustration I currently get with my iPhone on a regular basis. Really glad I didn't pull the trigger on a Desire now.

So the phone acts as the dnla media server and i assume it'll just show as a server in your PS3's xmb?

If so, that is just absolutely awesome
