Guys,

Looking at buying a ps3 - mainly as a blu-ray player, but probably the odd game.

Any advice - any real benefit or buying a new slim - dunno why but the old fat one always seems to be a bit more attractive - bang for buck.

Cheers

They are pretty much the same apart from the obvious. Slims have a bigger HDD out if the box if you didn't want to upgrade the HDD in a fat.

The slims can be quieter depending on the model of the PHAT.. The original phats can get noisy. I've have an original launch day 60gig, during BD playback the fan can kick in after 20mins or so. Its not too loud though, nothing like a 360 or anything. I also had a 40gig that was silent at first... Then after a yr, during a couple of games the thing turned into a turbine.. Just playing a couple of EA games strange enough.. Anyway sold that for a slim and the slims I have (two of them) are both very quiet..

Bottom line, you just need to be a little careful on the phat for fan noise.. Probably best going for a slim if its BD playback your'e after.

If i had a choice of models i'd go for the slim with the smallest hard drive. Fats run hot and munch electricity, slims do too but to a much lower extent.

No ps3's are quiet because barely any games have an install to hard drive option so you get a lot of disc noise / reading.
Just get a 120gb slim for the above reasons hardly any games even have an install to hard drive option or when they do it's just a small amount.

My 40gb fat is very quiet. I'd struggle to tell you which games I have installed. I don't notice the disk drive or the hard drive. Or the fans for that matter. Maybe I'm lucky

That flies in the face of the majority then, because the PS3 is renowned for being quiet even when reading from a disc. Mine certainly isn't noisy in the least.

Just my 2 cents;

I have a 80GB PS3 Phat, after about 5 seconds when you turn it on it's completely silent, you can't hear anything, maybe the odd disc noise while something is loading but that's it. I also find, and I hope I don't offend anyone, but the Slims do look like cheap pieces of plastic compared to my 80gb original. Come on, there's a reason why they released it Slim + Bigger HDD + Huge price cut.

Slightly going to hijack the thread;

Ive weighed up the pros and cons of the ps3 and 360, and decided the ps3 is better for me since it has the best exclusive games and online play is free.

A game that has caught my interest is MAG, I was wondering, im used to playing first person shooters on my PC with the ordinary mouse/kb setup, so can I use a mouse and keyboard to play mag?

I've seen videos for some mouse peripherals the fragnstein and the frag fx, does anyone have experience with these and which would you reccomend? If there is a way I can use my PC mouse/kb I would do that, as the ps3 will be used with my pc monitor.

Thanks
