My wallet is now £1190 lighter...

new camera body, not sure of the nikon range but that seems like an equiv price range compared to the 7D

Yup, I am now the proud owner of a AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. :D
Also picked up a Nikon 1.4X TC for my 300mm f4 the other day. Just need to get out and give them a spin now. Am hopefully staying in a B&B on Holy Island next week so should get some decent shots then.

Nice - if its anything like the canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L im sure you will be more than happy.

Woo Hoo! Cookie time! :D

I rented the 24-70 a few times last year, and every time I wrapped it up to post back, it pained me!

I have my own copy now, and it's a lens that you'll have to prise from my cold dead hand, I'm never selling it!!

I was the owner of a 300 f4 too, and I deeply regret selling that... Looking forward to seeing your pics with both lenses!

I have to say though....ever since I got my 35L and 80/1.8, my 24-70 rarely comes out to play.

It is amazing, and such a reliable lens, its sharp, it's quick to focus but with 2 bodies, 35/85 combo is just awesome.

I have now sold my Sigma 300mm f2.8 as the Nikon 300 f4 replaces it. It may be a stop slower, but it also a lot lighter which better suits my current lifestyle. The plan is to carry my 10-20mm, 24-70mm, 300mm + ultra light Gitzo tripod etc so I can keep the overall weight to under 10Kg but still have most bases covered. If I know what I'm going to be taking shots of, I can crack out my more specific kit. Before trying to slim my kit down it was hovering around 20Kg, which is not too good for my back, lol.

MK, why do you not post as much these days? I miss your macro stuff

Because I am a lazy dumbass, lol. I have taken quite a few shots over the last year (and some of them pretty good) but I have hardly processed any of them! These days I seem to go out, take some shots, upload them into Lightroom and then... well that's it. They just sit there. I really need to start chewing through the shots. Have to admit not much Macro has been happening though tbh. It's more landscapes at the moment.

Yeah I can see the draw of a prime setup (I've got a; 30mm f1.4, 60mm f2.8 Macro, 150mm f2.8 Macro & 300mm f4), but this is going to be my walkaround and I think the zoom will be of more use than the wider aperture or bokeh quality etc. Also as mentioned above, I am trying to rationalise my kit as I am doing a lot more long distance walking (up to about 25miles) so the less kit the better if it can still cover most bases. The 24mm f1.4 & 85mm f1.4 are still on my list though (As is a 5mm f4 one day). :)

Having used a very similar amount of kit for longish distance walking I think you're looking at the right way to go.:) I used to walk around with a Tokina 12-24, Sigma 24-70 and Canon 300 f/4 and it suited most of my nature/landscape needs, one thing I did miss was a macro function if I didn't take a set of extension tubes.

Got rid of the Sigma in the end and have now ended up with a 35mm prime and a 70-200 f/4 instead of my 300 f/4 (loved it) because it wasn't quite versitile enough.:)

Those and a nice small tripod are a godsend .:p

The best thing about the 35L is you can pick out someone using the razor thin depth of field from a crowd at 35mm. You can't do that with 2.8 aperture as well, the slight difference on paper really make a big difference visually on the images.

The difficult thing is that focus can be missed simply by breathing, and the focus plane would have shifted and the subject would be out of focus.
