Pet Insurance. Probably a good idea.

Well according to my sister, she's her normal happy self, but dragging her legs behind her. I'm thinking that if she's not actually in pain, then maybe one of the doggy wheelchair things might work. There are reports of some dogs regaining use of their hind legs in time with these, and it's a few hundred quid as opposed to thousands.

The dog is 4 by the way, which is why it's such a bummer and so unexpected. She's absolutely mental and it's strange to think she won't be bounding around the place like a bluebottle on acid anymore. :(

I think with such problems at the age of 4, you probably have to recognise that unfortunately it may not last much longer beyond the operation and if it does, it's likely to rack up big bills along the way with aftercare and perhaps more problems. It's hard to let go at any time, but sometimes it's for the best.

What does everyone spend on cat insurance? I'm looking to get two kittens when we move into the new place (omg a house! with a bath and EVERYTHING) and want to know what I should expect to pay out a month.

It really does depend on what sort of level of cover you are going for (basically over all allowable claim amount)

But I would suggest looking at ones where you don't have to pay pet bills upfront then claim back, as I had a claim in for the dog for close to 500quid for 4months and also life time policies (not yearly ones as they can up the amount you're paying each year if your pet has more and more problems)

One thing I would say with cats, if they are outdoor cats anything which is likely to injure them is more likely to kill them instantly (car, fox, people, poision) and as such so might affect if you actually need the insurance but if you have house cats then the risks are mainly what you make so it would make sense to have it then :)

not sure if we're going to keep them indoors or not atm, house isn't THAT big and there IS a cat flap built in too.

£0, be sensible, its an animal not a person.

I sound harsh, but I've got a dog and a cat now, had 6 cats in total and 5 dogs, all the cats died of old age bar the one I have now, One dog was diagnosed with cancer (diagnosed and destroyed on the spot) two to old age and one was run over, and I currently have a labrador with the brain of a cow.
I've never bought pet insurance and wont ever either.

Vets will stand there and spin out reams of Bull**** in an attempt to get you to stup up cash to get Fido to limp on a few months longer, Ignore them.

Wow, what an animal lover.

Why bother having them.

Surely to become a vet, you need to be someone who genuinely cares about animal welfare. I suppose it can become like any other job where you have something or a service that's in demand and you get paid well... people just get greedy.

Not all vets get paid well ( my wife who's is a vet works around 65/70 hrs a week for 34k a year Drugs & nursing staff all cost money + plus insurance. Do you complain when you goto a accountant and they charge £300 for 1/2 hour?? Or maybe a dentist? It's SIMPLE if you cannot afford a pet don't have one!

I don't know of any vets that are paid well. :p Average wage seems to be under £40k.

Being irresponsible is not sensible.

Its not irresponsible.

I dont remember ever having to take any of the animals I have owned to the vet with broken limbs after say, being run over.

Or eating something they shouldnt of, or falling off something they shouldnt of been on, or getting into fights with other animals.

Irresponsible is letting the animal get into harms way in the first place, If the animal requires long term medical treatment or an operation in the thousands the responsible thing to do is to put it down and not be so completely stupid as to waste many hundreds or thousands of pounds on a pet.

Bin it and get a new one :p

Nice and sensitive....

I have to agree with the majority here, its probably best for the animal and probably you and your sister if you get her put down :( £4000 is a lot of money, and there is no guarantee that it would work .

I don't think you understand the concept of insurance.

The responsible thing to do when you get a pet is to pay for it's medical care, when you have an animal or child or any dependant it's your responsibility to take care of it, killing it because you don't want to spend on money on it is not responsible. Only an idiot would buy a pet if they were that concerned about money.

Makes you wonder how people coped with pets that needed help in the 70s 80s 90 even before then, pet insurance is just a scam, vet are just pimps that prey on the people to pay stupid amounts of money, sorry but animals need minimal after care, bowl of food and check up, its not like human being needing constant care and someone checking up on them, how much does it costs for a person to work in a vet and check up on certain animals,

One woman in my street paid to have her cats ashes turned into diamond, she never had a childern and was clueless in the head, she took it to the vet many times and the vet must have made a killing off her.

This is probably one of the most ignorant posts I have ever seen, and that's saying something on this forum!

You are unfortunetly not in any position to preach to me about the responsibility required to be a parent or a pet owner.

No, in your opinion this is what someone should do. I'm sure you spend money on things that others would say is a waste of money, does that make you irresponsible?

Neither are you by saying someone who spends a lot of money on their pet's healthcare is "completely stupid."

No, I wouldnt say I did.

Well yes I am, its a pet, not a person a fine example of this, I've just got off the phone to my mum in the states, her cat has been recieving treatment for a "allergy" for almost a year at the cost of $100 a month.
Yesterday they got told by a different vet the cause of the problem is an inner ear defect that will cost nearly $2000 to put right.
$3200, to stop a cat sneezing.

$3200.

THREE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS!.

To put the cat down would have been $150.

Its a cat.

Honestly some people are so emotionally weak its pathetic.
