Some time ago my wife took her car into BMW Sheffield for a service. They told her she needs new discs and pads which I thought was a little strange as the car was only on around 38k and under 3 years old.

They also told her that her the rear tyres need to be replaced which again I thought was very strange as I know I replaced them around 8k miles ago.

I was in Prague at the time so I told her to get the discs and pads done but I will sort out the tyre myself. The dealer seems to try and frighten her and told her to be very careful when driving and not to use the motorway.

I checked the tyres and they seem fine, I have done another 6k miles on them and the car just passed its MOT without even an advisory on the tyres. Im beginning to feel that they just tried to con her into buying new tyres and possible even the discs and pads

Has anyone ever experienced this sort of thing from a BMW dealer?

EDIT, forgot to say its a shame because my wife bought a brand new E90 from them back in 05 and I would have bought another car from them at some point in time if it was not for this.

Yah but I really would have thought a main dealer would not do something like this. Especially for a couple of tyres that they probably would only make 30 quid on.

your wife went to a stealer on her own thats why they tried to scare her into buying tyres

Stealers for you, My sister took her Yaris to Toyota few years ago with a squeaky brake problem (needed some copper grease) They took the wheels off looked at the pads and discs.. called my sister and demanded £350 to change her front discs and pads, I say demanded as they refused to let her take the car away at first! saying it wasn't safe to drive. Finally they agreed to let her take it, But she had to pay something like £80-£100 for them to put the wheels back on

I checked the discs and pads later that night and they were worn but not dangerous in the slightest. Changed the lot anyway a few weeks later for £80.

I swear they wouldn't of pushed their luck if it was me or just some other male.

every main dealer does this

Vauxhall dealer tried this with me.

You were mug enough to pay for the brakes tbh i told them where to go.

I've had this in the past from BMW and SAAB dealers. Back then I didn't know any better and had the disc and pads replaced at costs of £500+.

I only realised something wasn't right when a year later the discs needed replacing again.

Now I only use local / small garages and do some research before getting any work done. I try and pick up as much as I can from forums like this :)

I don't mean to sound like a stalker or anything but does your wife live in Crosspool?

lol. Was it 3 boxes? if so it was my macbook

How do you think it looked in real life? better then the pics or still not keen?

May have been, can't remember but I deliver in your area every day. I don't think it looks bad I'm just not sure if it looks as nice as a nice shiny metallic.

Oh and I never had any problem with Sytner Sheffield as my next door neighbor is pretty high up there (alpina b5 company car for a while) but Stratstone in Chesterfield are very good, I got a free arch liner from them even!
