i am slowly turning my desktop into an htpc, waiting for Lian Li pc-33b case to arrive, but am going to change my psu to a more quieter one,
can anybody give me some advice to which one to buy, i am looking for a super silent psu??

Antec True Power. I use the 650w version but a 500w is available.

I tried a few PSU`s before deciding to keep this one. OCZ StealthXstream and Corsair TX were too noisey.

so between antec true power and Zalman heatpiped, what are your thoughts?
also is it necessary to have controllable fans?

That depends on who makes the Zalmans, I've had no dealings with them for PSU's.

Everyone knows Antec are rock solid.

good reply, i was going to buy an htpc case from antec, but was told that Lian Li were better, but maybe for psu they are good.

what about the types, Zalman are heatpiped(so no fan, so quieter than Antec??)
please let me know

Zalman had their days of greatness decade ago when they introduced their big fan shaped heatsinks and that's it. Now they're just one of these bling bling companies.
Instead of hype they should use that money to quality parts. That heatpipe crap just slows airflow through PSU which puts further stress on those cheap Chinese crap capacitors they use.

so what is the verdict, obviously psu with fans are noisier than psu without, but i am still indecided on what to go for.

Well as i said i have used Zalmans in all my HTPC build's (about 40 of them) for the last 2 years and had no problems. They do not use cheap chinese capacitors in them and if you research them on the internet you will find a lot of good reviews of them.

It still has a fan but it runs really slowly so it's more or less silent. My Zalman is the best psu i have ever had and have had it for around three years now.

There are passive supplies available, though i would be looking at one of the seasonics that turns its fan off below 300w or so.

Spcr forums are good for this.
