Question

Building computer from scratch and was thinking about those 2 cards.

What about games such as CoD 5, Far Cry 2, TF2? Which card would prevail ? (doesnt show on that benchmark)
Edit: Especially those games. I will play them most

i would say the gtx260 its a more up-to date card and supports drirectx 11 for games such as dirt 2 and BFBC2, also might run cooler then the 4890, the games you play the gtx260 will handle like a dream. so i say gtx260 is your best buy.

Triple typo detected :p Pretty sure you meant GTX460 hehe

And I wouldn't recommed the Palit card...as the "toy fan" on their cooler are known to be loud and poor at cooling. Spend a few pounds extra and get the MSI Cyclone GTX460 768Mb instead:

Great cooling and quiet fan.

So GTX 460.
Even though its a DX11 card, would it handle Oblivion better than a HD 4890 ?
As in, is the card faster or not
I don't recall Oblivion being Nvidia or ATI bias as a game, but I guess we should stick to GTX460 768MB vs 4980 as a hardware should we?

Here's some comparison between GTX460 768MB vs 4890:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/156?vs=175

If comparing both at stock speed, they pretty much trade blows with each other, however GTX460 768MB do offer the following benefits:

- dx11 support
- CUDA and Physx and better driver support for linux (even if you don't use it, it's still something extra)
- Better overclock potential (almost all GTX460 can overclock from stock speed 675MHz to at least 800MHz (higher clock is doable as well, but results varys from card to card)
- Cooler running and much quieter than the 4890 (assuming you are getting the MSI Cyclone GTX460 768MB at £129.99)
- Runs better on Nvidia games (annoying as it may to ATI card owners, but the fact remain that there are much more games being Nvidia optimised than ATI optimised i.e. Starcraft II, Crysis, Metro2033, FFXIV)

So at the same price, picking the GTX460 768MB over the 4890 should be no-brainer.

If you've got the money, do stretch to the 1GB. It's considerably better- not just the extra memory, they're actually different cards and the 1GB version performs well above the 768.
