Ps3 HHD upgrade question.

Just have a few questions to which i cant find a difinitive answer too.


1: Whats the largest hard drive (Gb wise) you can get for a ps3?

2: Is it true that the best to get is the 5,400RPMS HDDS as the 7,200 are just slowed down to the 5,400rpm speed?

3: Is theer anyway you can backup your ps3 without using a USB external hard drive? For e.g, connecting the ps3's hard drive to your pc and dragging the files across to the new hard drive.


...thats about it :D All thats left to say is ty for your advice :)

P.s MY ps3 is the older chunky type and came with a 80GB hard drive :)

1 - 1tb drives work, So anything under that.

2 - Not sure whether the 7,200rpm's are slowed down as such, But you see no noticable performance from getting one, So save the money and get a 5,400.

3 - In theory, Yes you should be able to connect it and back it up. The files won't be readable by the pc but it should still work.
 
1. It'll take whatever you can physically fit inside. Iirc we're up to 620gb(?) laptop drives so something around that.

2. It is true to go for 5400 though the reason you have given is false. The drive isn't slowed down, it's just not worth the price difference as it has barely any effect on load speeds.

3. No, you need an external drive. What i did though when i needed to backup and didn't own a drive was delete everything except my game saves and then backed up to a 1gb USB pen drive. You can just redownload everything anyways.

This won't work. I can't remember the exact reason but iirc it has something to do with the PS3 using a proprietary file system that the PC is unable to read.

One bit of advice I will give you is that the screws used to secure the caddy and hold the HDD in place are made of Cookie Dough and will happily round off on you. Make sure you have a perfectly sized screwdriver and pleanty of downforce on them screws (also have a drill to hand just in case as I had to use a drill on one of the caddy screws)

+1 I did this trailing my Vertex LE in my PS3 :eek:
 
No point upgrading it even metal gear solid 4 which is huge barely uses any install space.
So unless you are planning on having loads of demos and video on there I wouldn't bother as seems the new trend is not to have an install option at all on ps3 versions of games.

Doesn't MGS4 have an optional 4gig install (hardly small for a console install). Heavy Rain is over 4 gig as well.

On the horizon, GT5 apparently has a 10gig (optional) install. You never know what's round the corner an always think you have enough space right up until something comes out of the blue, and then you don't.

Considering you can get a 500GB drive from OC for £43, it's hardly bank breaking, and is great if you do decide to use your PS3 as a media player.
 
yea but it's unlikely you are ever going to have more than 20 games installed at any one time right ?

That, plus the 7200 RPM HDs ran hotter.

I also deleted most of my videos then backed up the rest of the data onto a 8GB USB flash drive. You'll also need a copy of the firmware which it asks for after installing the new HD.

I have 19 games from the PS Store alone, and about 6 boxed games that have installed a significant amount of data. There's also a few PS1 games on there from the store.

Altogether that's just under 60gig, and I only bought my PS3 this year.
