Since there is some knowledgable bmw folk among us, i was hoping someone could help me with a quick question.

My MAF sensor has gone on my 2001 525i. I was looking for a replacement part and found a well priced pattern part for a 530i. Are these interchangeable? It looks the same, but the part number is not the same.

The M54B30 (in the 530i) has a different MAF sensor to the other engines in the M54 range. Your engine shares a MAF with the older M52TU series engines though, so if you find a 99- 528i MAF that'll work.

Do be aware that pattern MAF's are false economy and often cause more problems than they fix. Get a proper one, IIRC they are Seimens.

Mine looks like this:

All the ones i have found for the 528i etc tend to look like this though:

There are two types for the M52's - early ones and later ones. The changeover was late 98, I think it was probably when the M52TU was introduced. Yours should be the same as one on an M52TU. I suspect you are finding 96-98 528i MAF's.

The best place to get the MAF is going to be from BMW. It's list price is £280 but Cotswold Hereford BMW will give you a 10% discount if you contact them through the BMWLand forum. This takes it down to £252 delivered.

GSF also have a Siemens MAF for £229 delivered.

They made the E46 328i for like.. 18 months. They are all early E46's.

No, but, I'd guess the e46 would be more likely to have the later M52, which afaik none of the e36's have. :)
