Pet Insurance. Probably a good idea.

No, I wouldnt say I did.

Well yes I am, its a pet, not a person a fine example of this, I've just got off the phone to my mum in the states, her cat has been recieving treatment for a "allergy" for almost a year at the cost of $100 a month.
Yesterday they got told by a different vet the cause of the problem is an inner ear defect that will cost nearly $2000 to put right.
$3200, to stop a cat sneezing.

$3200.

THREE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS!.

To put the cat down would have been $150.

Its a cat.

Honestly some people are so emotionally weak its pathetic.

Fact: The likes of you should not be allowed to own pets.

As far as you are concerned they are just "a bit of fun to have around".
Are you one of these people who will keep a kitten until iy grows up and then dump it?
Take on a puppy and as soon as it ceases being "fun" it is time to move on?

The likes of you make me sick.
You call yourself an animal lover yet you won't even consider the responsible thing.
As soon as your "piece of fun pet" gets injured, hurt or ill then it's time to put it down.
No connection, no form of emotion, just a nice quick cheap injection and job done.
Or maybe a garden spade - I mean then you won't even have to pay for the injection?

You are so de-void of emotion to think that pets are there until either you get bored of them or they need "putting down", when a simple monthly amount of money meas that your pet can live a life and if something goes wrong its covered.

You can tell me over and over again about how £3500 is too much to spend on an animal.
If you have insurance then £3500 never needs to be spent on a pet.

Why shouldn't an animal have as much right to life as you or I?
No I'm not "a greeny" - I eat meat and I enjoy eating meat.
But certain animals have been adopted into the household and these things deserve as much right to a good life as you or I.

How dare you sit back and tell people they are in no position to preach to you.
When somebody comes up with such an evil position whereby an animal should simply be destroyed as it has ceased being fun or is injured or course people have the right to counter your crazy position.

Thankfully your kind are in their minority.

Update: She dog seems to have regained some use of her rear legs which is a bit surprising. Another vet told my sister yesterday to try leaving her to lots of bed rest (at complete odds with the other vet who said £4000 op NAO!), and to keep her in a cage to stop her moving around too much.

She doesn't yelp when you stroke her back or anything, and isn't in pain so we're thinking of trying one of the doggy wheelchairs as a long shot to see if this can aid healing/recovery.

In other news, I hear lots of 3rd world children have TB - I passed on the message from atpbx that the doctors should just stamp on their heads and save money :p

This is probably one of the most ignorant posts I have ever seen, and that's saying something on this forum!

lol, really, live in the real world, pet insurance is not a must so why should people have it.

No, I wouldnt say I did.

Amen to that.

Nope, that's not the point, its about people not affording to help the "pet" big difference in being able to afford to pay the vet bills and not, how can you say that spending FOUR THOUSAND pound on a pet that will only live 15 years and when your own health care is FREE, if you can afford it you dont need insurance, if you cant you need insurance, simple.

Just because you and your special friend are de-void of emotion doesn't mean that everyone else is.

Some of the posts in here are bordering on completely retarded.

Really, how many pet owners dont have insurance, how many people drive a car around without insurance, its called life. DEAL WITH IT

Just to echo prior comments; healthcare is expensive for any sentient being. I didn't have any insurance for my dog for the first 2 years (after all it is only a lab/collie cross and not going to win any prizes) until I spent £350 on inoculations and castration. Then I thought:

a) I have now spent this money and don't want it to see it go to waste (the whole he might get hit by a car tomorrow scenario)
b) He IS part of the family and deserves what I can do to help ensure he has a long and happy life as we will all miss him once he is gone (not for a while yet)

I have the choice of whether to have insurance or not, I can afford it, I have it DEAL WITH IT

I wouldn't like to be in the situation you/your sister is in right now with my two cats. The guilt of not paying and being PTS against breaking the bank is a very difficult choice for me personally.

As a result I pay pet insurance.

I'm not a big believer in any type of insurance other than mandatory (car, house, etc) but generally as an animal lover/owner I think that Pet Insurance is essential.

Good luck with getting some help OP, it's a tough call for you and your sister. One that I wouldn't like to make.

She's in the process of sorting out insurance for her other dog now, let's just say it's a lesson hard-learned. I daresay getting any sort of insurance for the one that's not well, should she recover, will be next to impossible. :(

Thanks for all the kind posts and advice. My sister's got in touch with the Blue Cross; she'll be speaking to them today. Whatever happens, we'll try to cover as much as possible whilst still being realistic.
