last night my home was burgled whilst we slept. they broke in through the downstairs window and stole the keys to both my cars, laptop and ipod touch 2g. bye bye lexus...bye bye beetle :(

now i loved my little touch and used it every day. except it had a cracked screen and the ios 4 made the battery last about 90 minutes.

my htc hero has seen better days and is currently in an unusable state due to the touchscreen going funny. i liked the droid platform but loved the spit and polish of the touch.

been grumbling about carrying around 2 devices for a while and this situation is forcing me to decide.

i would love an iphone 4 but the cost and contract's turn me off.

the touch would mean me carrying around 2 devices again when i eventually repair the hero.

any ideas?? quite tempted to just go down to the apple store buy an iphone off the shelf and cut down my current sim to fit - to hell with the cost.

my current contract has about 5 months left, i could then go on a £10 ppm sim only deal for 12 months.

there are some question marks around the iphone 4 around the signal and battery...what can i expect in a typical day?

i am happy to charge it every night and i get good t mobile signal between where i live and work.

cheers
Yimpy

If you liked the iTouch I'd say go for an iPhone 4. It's a great piece of kit, and it should be a noticeable improvement on your Touch. Battery life is good at around two days. Signal disappears now and then but I can't say that isn't due to vodafone's less than brilliant coverage in Leeds.

I bought mine outright from eBay and cut the sim and it's all good.

Phone is much heavier and a tad bulkier from what I've seen of my mates ones compared to my iPod touch. Personally I'm in the same boat, would love one but the cost is just daft and extra bulk/weight would annoy me compared to my normal mobile. Yes I can leave one device at home if I have an iPhone, but I can't leave the weight.

Plus I'd hate to lose it, which would mean having phone insurance.. I don't need that with my ancient mobile :)

It all comes down to the cost and weight for me, I wouldn't use the added phone features with an iPhone though - if yo would then perhaps that changes everything. It's worth checking them out regardless as some of the apps will work when out of wifi unlike the iPod touch (only thing that annoys me).

as long the battery lasts a day with music, phone and trip to the gym i'll be ok.

my daughter tends to have a blast on the games too for 30 minutes a day.

i appreciate the droid os is more versatile - but i'm almost 35 and happy for a simple life :)

currently using a Sony Ericsson W810i and loving the fact it works instantly, battery life is awesome and it never freezes :) also could play footy with it all day and it would still work

I've just made the choice between an ipod touch and iphone as well.

The touch would have done most of what I wanted, but there are a lot of location based apps that I wanted to use, so the lack of GPS and 3G were killers. I ended up forking out for a SIM free iphone.

Talking of which, I wouldn't pin your hopes on walking into an Apple store and picking one up - they sell out super fast. It's a 3 week wait for online orders too.

If you had your touch stolen and your phone is on the brink then surely getting a iPhone is logical as you will be have to pay out for a need touch anyway?

asuming you have home contents insurance wont they shell out for your stolen ipod and broken/stolen phone ?

should cover or nearly cover the cost of an iphone4 ?

went to the apple store today in brent x. they had no stock and no way of reserving them :( don't fancy waiting for 3 weeks for an online order.

any alternatives ??

incidentally my 5 year old daughter got her hands on an ipad and i nearly ended up buying one on impulse. they look so much fun :) bit pricey for a 5th b'day pressie though...lol

is there any iphone 4 issues i should be aware of other than the aerial/signal shannanigan??

the apple guy told me to wait for a white one. Any reason why i would want a white one? seems like a nightmate colour and guaranteed to get you mugged if you use it on the street.

No alternatives unless you want to pay a premium to get it early - if you do, there are plenty of grey market resellers with SIM free stock, but you'll pay an extra £100-£200 over the RRP.

Just order it online and wait the 3 weeks. Mine's due in a week and a half and I feel your pain, 3 weeks can drag a looooong time.

Can't see any attraction in the white model, have never understood Apple's obsession with white (can you believe that all the dock insert are STILL only available in white, madness), looks naff and gets dirty fast.

That's not good, honestly that really isn't but how hard is it to charge a phone really ? ;)

Try telling that to an HTC Desire owner! For a normal phone I agree, 2 days is poor, however for a smart phone it's outstanding.

The thief broke in and stole you ipod touch and broke your HTC Hero and left it, contents insurance will pay out if you have it and you can get an iphone4. ;)

Depends on the insurance. Some won't pay out for individual high value items if they're not specifically detailed in the policy. Other times, the excess if prohibitive.

not going to claim on the insurance. hardly worth it with a £250 excess and i'm in the IT business so can get my hands on an old laptop.

will end up paying an increased premium over the years - just not worth it for such a small claim.

trying to get through to the brent x store on the phone - been on hold for almost an hour. don't fancy doing that every day to check for stock :(

Hmm not really comparing like with like iphone is double the price of a touch.

I'd never pay 600 for the phone I have an old nokia which works great as a phone and doesn't lose it's signal. Although tempted to get an old 3GS but where can you get one that guaranteed not stolen/broken?

friday evening i bought a 32gb 'as new' one off the bay for £503 , arrived today and tbh they could have told me it was unused and i would have believe them. the cables where all still packaged up and the handsets spotless
