Hotlinking?.. what is it?

I got a PM warning me that I did it and that If I did it again I would die the most painful death.

I did post a pic of a boat recently so I don't deny that I probably did do it but I guess I should understand exactly what it is.

Just curious.

:)

Linking to a picture that is hosted on a another website (rather than an image host eg imageshack) , some websites will stop you from doing it by automatically replacing your image with something pretty vulgar as you are basically "stealing" their bandwidth, this is why it is not allowed.

As above, linking directly to another website. Because forums are so busy, a single small image can cause a web site to go well above its bandwidth allowance and cost them money - as such, lots of people block hotlinking or when they discover an image that has been hotlinked, they can replace with something un-family friendly.

The best option is to right click, save as (download to your computer) and then re-upload to an image hosting service.

The FAQ is strong with this one.

There is always a master and apprentice, no more, no less.

Read the FAQ, you did not.

Some guy has a website and he has many pictures of waterfalls, you hotlink it and use it somewhere else, thus stealing his bandwidth. The admin notices this, and decides to replace waterfall21.jpg with a file named exactly the same but which infact is ******.

You get banned because what has been seen cannot be unseen. The word above that is **** is the name of a famous picture.
