Civ 4 or 5. Which to buy

Well I've never played any of the Civs before, but I bought 5 on a feeling that I might enjoy it and 30 hours put in over this weekend tells me that I spot on! I think if you like the Civ 5 demo, then you'll probably like the full game - there's no gamble there.

From what I've read, 4 is a little more complicated and therefore probably harder for a Civ newbie to get in to.

The way I see it, Civ4 is a fully developed game, Civ5 (which I'm thoroughly enjoying) is going to be improved a fair bit in the coming months. Plus I think it's more accessible than Civ4 for someone new. So if you liked the demo, go for the latest release.

I'd probably go for a cheap complete edition of 4 and play that for few months. Come holiday sales I'd buy Civ 5 and hope the AI has been patched. I don't think either of them is the better game, they are just different. 5 is definitely easier to start with though. Civ 4 has a lot more features (due to 2 expansions) that it might be a bit heavy to start with for new Civ gamers.

Ordered Civ 5 based on all your recommendations and the fact I quite liked the demo. Even though I didn't really know what I was doing. Quite like the laid back turn based approach.

I would say definitely 5. Seems to be a successful sequel to 4, so in the long run will have better longevity :)

Hope you enjoy it :D

Will get it myself when i can afford it :p

If you need any tips just post on here mate :)

Glad you said that. :)
Is there a quick start guide to get you into the game?
I have had a look at the 200+ manual but looks like it would take quite a while to read. Usually I just dive straight in and pick it up but I'm not sure this is the best way with this game?

I just dived in as well, I think its the best way to learn, expand quickly as well, make sure that you have settlers to claim territory...

Also added you on msn dude :)

I'd get 5. I have played all of them since Civ 1 and this is one of the best. Some weird stuff - in Civ 4 you could easily avoid money issues by moving a slider - have been removed making a cleaner, less cluttered game experience. Moving units across the sea is also vastly superior as previous to that it was a real pain.

Is it dumbed down? I don't think so. There is a real penalty for expanding to fast now and battles are infinitely more strategic than just lumping a Stack of Doom at the enemy. Added to that is the option of puppet states and handing city states back to their original imhabitants.

Oh and city states rock. Apart from Genoa. Lost many a good man to take that place.

While it will take a while for the right balance to be found, it is already a great experience.

I think Civ4 is the better game for what is available ****now****. However as most have pointed out, civ5 looks sexy, is accessable for newcomers and should have loads of continued developments and mods!
