Hi Guys,

I've got a friend who needs to build/buy a new system for around the £600 mark. He can go to like £630 or w/e so don't worry for getting it BANG on budget.

I specced him an AMD rig and an i5 rig.
Both of these used the GTX 460 768mb gfx card for around £120, OCZ Stealth2 600w, Sammy F3 1TB HDD, Antec 300 Case, 4GB PC12800 Dual Channel RAM and a CPU Cooler (Titan Fenrir or Artic Freezer v2) and cheapest optical drive.

I used the AMD 955 and the i5 760.

I've told him that the i5 760 generally will do better for gaming (correct me if I'm wrong)

I'm looking for confirmation on these specs, any problems with them or alternative specs with changing the gfx card maybe or whatever you like. For example should he go for i3 combo but up the gfx card?

He's happy to buy OC bundle or individual parts or even a full system.

Any input really would be helpful

He will be gaming on 22" @ 1920 x 1080

He needs the full tower, no OS, no monitor

Thanks a lot,

Wu

EDIT: Recommendations on mobos that go with those CPUs within budget would REALLY be helpful. Can't remember exactly which ones I chose but at this budget there's only a choice of like 1 or 2 anyway...

With a 1080p monitor I'd say you definately want to squeeze in a 1GB 460 at least in the GPU department. The 768MB will be struggling in some titles at that res. If that means sticking with AMD for the CPU so be it.

This is what I've got for him so far including VAT + delivery - anything wrong with it? Can it be beaten by something/someone?

Aaah - right. Yeah I think that would mean going AMD over Intel - you sure about the performance drop with the 768mb wouldn't be the same with performance drop of Intel going to AMD ?

sorry yes it's because I was speccing both options and forgot to take out the AM3 board. : D

Thanks for the spec though stulid

do you think the PSU will be enough at 500w? Not worth going for non modular at similar price at 600w? And although I didn't say that he would be overclocking, he probably will therefore do you not think he would need a CPU cooler other than the stock or would that be sufficient up to say 3.4 Ghz on the i5 760 chip?

I know it's an matx mobo, and my preference is also full size atx. But unless you're spending even more (around £150 - impossible on this budget) to get one supporting x-fire/sli I can't see the point going full size. What do you get for your extra £25 going for the cheapest full-size atx? A longer board with more slots to remain ever empty. Meh.

Definite food for thought, thanks Liampope

single GTX460 card yes, your budget doesn't really allow a motherboard that does multi gpu support, unless you go AMD, then its crossfire only.

HDD size can be a minor thing.

If you are not going to store all sorts of junk on your PC you dont need a 1tb drive. Heck, 40gb is more than enough to run Windows 7 and a bunch of programs, so splashing out on a really fast massive hard disk may be a waste of money for some people.

UMM... Sir the HDD is not a minor thing (if you mean hard drive by hdd).

Yeah, imo the HDD itself is prolly one the top most important components. Hence buying an SSD for £200 a while back.

But I did say HDD size not just HDD. And going for a sam f3 500gb vs sam f3 1TB is simply about storage at that price/performance point.
